flying with pumped breast milk

DH and I are going away for a long weekend without DD. I plan on pumping while away and bringing the milk on the plane. I looked at the TSA website which says its OK BUT I'm wondering if anyone has actually done this and if they had a problem. We will be on an international flight......

I flew domestically with pumped milk and had a problem. Chat Icon
I had even checked with the carrier's website/policy, spoke with a supervisor prior to going through security and STILL had a problem - the TSA person at the security check said I was only allowed to bring expressed milk if I was traveling with an infant. Thankfully I had a copy of their policy and asked to speak with another superior and they let me board with three days' worth of breast milk. Phew.

I recommend calling your carrier ahead, asking them their policy on quantity and carrying method. Ask for it in writing, print it out and carry it with you when you go through security.

Re: flying with pumped breast milk

last year I was in Paris without DS. I called before I left and asked if I could bring my BM with me. They told me to bring DS birth certificate, and to bring it on the plane. So for 4 days i pumped all over Paris with my hand pump, and carried a cooler with milk with me. Then when flying home they wouldn't let me bring it on the plane. I fought with them for over an hour with my limited french, and they finally allowed me to put it under the plane but i was going to be charged $50. So I just dumped it.

Needless to say, I was not happy with the situation.

oh my goodness that is awful! Sorry you had to go through that!

I traveled with it - had no problem.BUT I was with my DD when doing it!

I carried on a days worth of milk for my DD and I checked all I pumped on the vacation because it was frozen (the belly is so cold in the plane that it stayed solid as a rock in my checked bag) and I just put it in my freezer when I got home!

But they never knew about that..so if you are able to freeze it - maybe that could be an option!

Hope you don't have any issues

Re: flying with pumped breast milk

I flew without DS. I had read that people had trouble with TSA when traveling with pumped milk w/o baby, so I froze my milk in freezer bags ( I was staying with my grandma). Put it in the medela cooler with the icepack. Put it in my checked baggage. Asked them to put a fragile sticker. And prayed a lot. When I got home my milk was a bit defrosted but still mostly frozen. And this was a 10 hour trip with a layover. So if you want to make sure to have it, check it. If you wanna risk being told to dump it, then take it with you.
