Breaking News: State Senate approves Bloomberg's Congestion Pricing Plan in Manhattan!!!!
Fox 5 just announced that they will be approving the plan bloomberg had -- trying to reduce pollution and congestion by CHARGING commuters to drive in manhattan during high congestion times!

Honestly-- I totally agree with this. There is just so much traffic in the city, it's ridiculous.
The tolls would only be for peak times, so it really only affects commuters who choose to drive as opposed to the train.
I will be interested in seeing how this pans out.

do you think people would voluntarily pay to drive in?
it is a tax write off.

I think that there are a lot of changes that need to happen to the transit system as well- it's in the worst shape ever these days.
Bottom line-- there are just too many people in the city-- from people who live here, commuters, tourists... something needs to be done to help organize the chaos.

I agree. It has worked in London, and other big cities. I think it is a step in the right direction. The MTA will need to figure out how to handle more volume, however.

I get that the city is crowded, but wasn't it only 5 years ago that the mayor was begging for people to come in and enjoy the city, the restaurants, the shopping because the economy was hurting and now they want to charge people to drive-in??

the ones who will suffer are businesses that truck stuff in - so they will increase their prices (for US!) so they can pay it, so theoretically we are all paying for it.

That was due to 9/11 when nobody wanted to visit.

They are also planning on charging delivery vehicles. When are they supposed to make deliveries? Off hours when nobody is open?
I think it's ridiculous. I don't agree with it at all. At least not for commercial vehicles. Because if they have to PAY to make deliveries, then they raise the price of the product, which in turn raises the price we get charged.

To me- the issues are
1. The mass transit is just not able to support any new commuters
2. Why is only up to 86th street? After 66th its pretty much residential. It seems a little biased to me.
MY DH commutes from the city to LI every day for work- and he needs to drive. This will not be good for us.

I think it is awful. DH drives in during High Traffic Times and will now have to pay. The company will one day be his and I think this is awful and really won't stop people at all.
Now they will just have to raise their prices and I just don't see it being beneficial for anyone.

there is too much pollution and too much congestion and also, this will hopefully allow emergency vehicles to get around better when necessary..

I agree with you- I think they people that drive in can't take the train- either they need there cars or they are driving thru the city to work in NJ (I have a friend that lives in Brooklyn - works in NJ - but drops his wife off at her office on his way)
this scares me that they are going to raise tolls at all the bridges- and I take a bridge everyday to work- and already spend $200 a month on tolls

Well my Brother works in London and says it hasn't made the slighest bit of difference to the level of traffic, it just costs more for people to get to work every day. It started with a smaller zone and was 5 pounds per vehicle, then they increased the zone dramatically and it is now 8 pounds per vehicle. The traffic is as bad as it ever was.

I think it's going to be interesting, but I don't know how practical it is going to be.
Wouldn't the toll have to be pretty high for it to even make a difference? In order for it to work, it would have to be substantially cheaper for people to give up driving and take mass transit. With LIRR's fares so high, I think it would take a lot for people to change their ways - both for financial and convenience reasons.
