Braxton-Hicks vs. early labor?

Any insight on how to tell the difference or when to be concerned?

Re: Braxton-Hicks vs. early labor?

Generally, bh don't hurt and don't happen with regularity. They may take your breathe away and u can feel the tightening all over your belly, but they're not painful. Usually labor is painful and will happen at intervals with the time in between either staying the same or slowly decreasing. That being said, everyone is different and sometimes during early labor, the intervals between contractions will increase or they am stop for a while.

Pretty much what Michelle said. BH you will feel your stomach get really tight but you won't have the cramping along with it. They will also be timeable and almost to the second. I had real contractions last week and didn't even need a clock I knew it was 10 minutes later..."like clockwork".

If you are in early labor you will be in pain and you will notice the def intervals in the timing. My mom and doctor both said you will see them go like 6 minutes, 6 minutes, 6 minutes, 4 minutes, 4 minutes, 4 minutes, 4 minutes, etc...not 10,6,12,5,3, etc.

Braxton-Hicks vs. early labor?

My doc just discussed this with me last week and said the easiest way to tell the diff is that BH do not get more severe or intense. They're uncomfortable, but not painful.

Yes. Also real contractions have a peak to the pain. Midway through the pain is more intense than when the contraction starts. With BH one hurts, the next one doesn't.

I asked my doc the very same question.
His response, "everyone is different."

He said, if you have more then 10 in an hour then go give the office a call.

For me, like others have said, it's a general tightening of the stomach (for me it hasn't been in a general location, now they are lower typically. Oh and that area gets rock hard). They should go away with a change in position or activity (walk around if you're sitting down etc) and they should be less frequent if you're staying hydrated.

No pain has been associated with mine. Although, depending on the location, if I'm walking and they happen I find it difficult to walk for a minute or so. Even though I know they're BH, I always check the time to make sure there's no pattern to them.

I never had BH just regular contractions. They are rhythmic, you can time them. That's how I figured out I was in labor and not just having gas pains. If they are coming at a regular pace (every 30 minutes or so) then it's labor
