Blood in spit-up

I am waiting for the ped to call me back, but if anyone has seen this pls let me know.

Last night we gave DS a 4oz bottle of formula to try out the brand we'll be supplementing when I go back to work next week - Similac Advanced. DS has gotten this before in the NICU and once or twice since then in the nursettes / RTF form. Otherwise I EBF. He is 3 months.

This morning I noticed some brownish blood in a spit-up stain on his sheet. Smaller than the size of a quarter, so a very little amount. He rarely spits up in general so this alarmed me.

I saw online that when BFing it could be from ME but he had formula last and I don't have any cracks etc. Wonder what this could be from?? I hope not a milk allergy...

Re: Blood in spit-up

I have no formula experience but ds spit up blood when he was about 6 months old. It turned out we had thrush. If I looked at my nipples they were fine but the suction of the baby would draw out blood. I had to pump and bottle to let my nipples heal and the pump would draw blood too just not as much as the baby. When ds spit up blood I brought the bib in for the doctor to look at and he checked the bib then ds's mouth and diagnosed thrush.

How scary! Are you sure it is blood? Sometimes formula stains are brownish. Good luck! Chat Icon

Blood in spit-up

milk allergies usually cause blood streaks in poop, not vomit. are you sure it was blood? are you sure that it didn't come from the babies nose? sometimes the dryness from the heat can cause a little nosebleed.........

Re: Blood in spit-up

My ped thinks it likely came from me...I'll see if it happens again. He seems fine. But it could also be dry in his room. Thx ladies!

Like a couple people said, it could be bloody snotty spit up or brown formula stains (the ready to feed stains for some reason are a lot darker than ones from powder).
