block parties and dogs?
someone asked if they could bring their dog to our block party. My immediate thought was no way. There will be too many kids and babies there and I worry about if someone is afraid of dogs, if the dog gets loose, if the dog poops, etc. Dh said it's an outdoor event so how could we really say no... thoughts?

You can absolutely say no if you want to - all the concerns you express are valid. Do you know this dog? Have experience with it? I'd be more inclined to say yes if I've interacted with the dog and know its temperament. My dog is a complete 85lb mush and would happily lay in the driveway/garage/front yard on his 20 foot tie out, minding his business, unless someone approached him to pet him. If you agree to letting the dog come, I'd tell the owners in advance that they have to bring a tie out and something to secure it with (ours stakes into the yard or can be wrapped around a railing, etc.) I don't think leaving the dog in the backyard is a good option -- with a block party, it's likely there will be adults and children coming in and out of the yard and the chance of the dog escaping and running out is too high.

I mean, I guess it depends on the dog.
My dogs would hate being at a block party - they don't like large crowds so I would never bring them. Many dogs like being in the crowd though.
Its up to you - if the party is just going to be on the block and they won't be in your house I would not have a problem with it.

I would be inclined to say no. My kids loves dogs, but they would be annoying and all over the dog and I would spend my whole time yelling at them to leave the dog alone. My firiend's daughter is deathly afraid of dogs and would probably cry the whole time. Just doesn't seem worth it to me for all the hassle and what-ifs.

I would say no, no all dogs are great with crowds even if their parents think they are. The dog will have a crappy time surrounded by so many people

You forgot to mention allergies. My son is allergic and I hate running into dogs bc sweet temperament or not, if the dog gets too close DS' eyes swell shut.

My dog loves people. The more, the merrier. Everyone who meets her, likes her. Even with all of that, I would never bring her to a block party unless everyone had already met her individually, and I knew for a fact that there wouldn't be anyone that didn't meet her already.
Basically, even in a best-case scenario, I wouldn't bring a dog to a block party...

If it were me, I'd share my concerns and see what they say. You can also ask them to keep the dog on a leash and close to them at all times.

This. I am not saying that you have to have your friends dog however all the concerns you have would be true then of any dog that lived on the block. Most dog owners clean up after their animal especially in a situation like that so going to the bathroom shouldn't be an issue. As for someone being allergic - honestly it's the street you cant stop people who live there from bringing their dogs out
I can understand not wanting a strangers dog but if that was my block party my dog would be outside with us most of the time if not the whole time.

Honestly, it would not cross my mind to say no. I feel like it is an outdoor space. I'm imagining some neighbors are going to have their dogs out.
I don't think it is unreasonable to ask them to keep their dog on a leash.

Understood. Definitely tell them its not OK with your neighbors and that should be it. If they can't leave their dog home, then they should stay home.
