Birth of 1st VS 2nd

Everybody (including my doctor) keeps telling me that things move faster with the 2nd. I get worried because my first would basically still be in my belly today if we didn't force her out 4 yrs ago. lol. It took a lot of time and energy to convince that girl that outside of my belly was a cool place to be. I keep praying that it won't be the same now with #2. That he comes on his own and in a timely matter.

So is there any truth to this first VS second deal? If you remember the details, what's the comparison between how far along you were when #1 & #2 were born? How long was the labor with each?

Re: Birth of 1st VS 2nd

I was in labor for 23 hours with my 1st and pushed for 1.5 hours. My 2nd had to be induced gall bladder issues. Started Pitocin around 930 in the morning and he was delivered at 2:42 after about 3 pushes. He was much easier to deliver. DS #3 would have been out with 1 push and only in labor for 5 or 6 hours total

I labored for 14 hours and pushed for 4 hours with number 1. Number 2 labored for 8 hours and pushed her out in about 10 mins.

#3 I'm scared is going to fall out lmao

World of a difference. I was so happy. #1 I was sore for a week after her birth. #2 I was walking around target the day we got home from the hospital

It was a lot shorter with DS 2 but, I did have time to get things in order. I was induced the first time and went into labor the second time. I started feeling crappy 2 days before he was born - and actually thought I was in labor that day (never having been in labor). But, overall, it was about half the time the second time around.

DS1: I went into labor the morning after my due date. Was in labor for 30 hours from start to finish. Pushed for 3+ hours and ultimately needed a Csection. He was born at 40W2D.

DS2: I had him at 37 weeks. I felt off the whole day but from the moment I actually realized I was in labor until I delivered took 9-10 hours. I pushed for less than 30 mins and had a successful VBAC.

As you can see my deliveries were completely different in every way!

Re: Birth of 1st VS 2nd

I was induced with both, dd1 2 days late and dd2 a week early. I will say I pushed for not even 10 minutes with three big pushes for dd2 and pushed for almost an hour with dd1!

Re: Birth of 1st VS 2nd

My first was 12hrs start to finish, pushed for an hour.
My second was 6hrs and pushed for about 8min. Maybe 3-4 pushes total. Much easier the 2nd time.

I am thrilled at the thought of a quicker labor the second time around! These stories are very encouraging. Chat Icon

Not that I can complain...my labor with #1 was about 6 hours start to finish so I am a little nervous about getting to the hospital in time with #2!!

I really hope these ring true for me! I was in labor over 24 hours. She was born 23.5 hours after my water broke and I pushed for an hour and a a half. It was awful. Crossing my fingers for an easier outcome!

Yeah everyone told me that too....

1st - 65 hour induction - born at exactly 39w.
2nd - 81 hour failed induction resulting in a C-Section - born at exactly 40w.

My second was much faster. The labor was several hours shorter and I only pushed for an hour with #2, where I pushed for 4 hours with number one. It really made that one hour seem like a breeze!

#1- Water broke 5 days before due date, induced and he was born about 12 hours later, pushed for 45 minutes

#2- Water broke 9 days before due date, induced but wasn't progressing, had c section. We found out after it was because the cord was wrapped around her shoulders so she couldn't come down but I'm sure I would have had a similar labor or quicker than DS had that not been the issue.

First was 8 hours with 15 min pushing. Second was less than 4 hours and 5 mins of pushing. 3rd was 7 hours and 30 min of pushing, I had a midwife and nurse who apparently didn't know that I shouldn't have been all the way on my back pushing.

From what my doctor's told me - the first one basically paves the way. So the pushing part is really where things go more quickly with subsequent deliveries.

#1 - 38 weeks - didn't know i was in labor, went to the doctor at 11:00am, was 6cm, went to the hospital, baby was born at 6:30pm, pushed for like 30-45 minutes

# - 39 weeks - again no clue I was in labor, 7cm at doctor at 12:30pm, DD was born at 2:30pm. Pushed for less roughly 3 minutes.

So for me it was much quicker, but i went into preterm labor twice with #2 so my situation is unique.

#1: 38 weeks, water broke, 7 hours of labor, 1 hour 35 mins of pushing
#2: 38 weeks & 3days, started contracting early in the day, real labor began and that was like 7 hours or so, maybe a half hour of pushing...maybe. It was 4 sets of pushes.

Both times my water broke, I didnt progress on my own and needed to be induced.

#1 was born 1 day late, pushed for about an hour, had third degree tears and an episiotomy. Tough recovery

#2 was born 5 days early, 1 push, only minor tearing. Easy recovery.

Things definitely went quicker the second time around.
