Big Black Ants
Last year on the first warm day of spring, I went into the upstairs bathroom to give my kids a bath and when I turned on the light I must have seen over 30 ants. That was the last day I saw them. Today I was in the bathroom and I saw about 3 of them.
Any thoughts on this? What is causing it and how I can get rid of it?
Thanks!

Re: Big Black Ants
Carpenter ants - we get them every year and have an exterminator come.

Re: Big Black Ants
The only thing I've found that works are Terro traps - I get them at Ace Hardware. They have a pet and child safe liquid in them and they work much better than the Raid or other similar traps. Thanks for the reminder - it's time to put a few out in the kitchen.

Re: Big Black Ants
I would have to agree that those are carpenter ants. We had them last year and we've been following a schedule with an exterminator. In fact, I saw a few so he just did an extra treatment. I was so upset to have them in the first place and then more upset to make the decision to use chemicals.

Re: Big Black Ants
yep sounds like Carpenter Ants - they can be worse than termites.
I have the exterminator here right now spraying stuff into my walls to get rid of them. They suspect we have a nest someplace under under our deck which is right up against the house. I am afraid to know what kind of damage they are doing!

Re: Big Black Ants
They are attracted to moisture. We found we had a leak in one of our bathroom sinks last year and luckily found their nest and killed a scary amount of them.
We have not see them since *knock on wood* DH uses some spray that he sprays around the foundation of our house. Its supposed to form a barrier that they can't cross.
