Best sippy cup for a 6 month old just starting out
DD is just starting out with a sippy of water. She is EBF but does have a bottle of BM every now and then which she takes no problem from either a Dr Browns or Born Free bottle.
Which sippy cup is best for her to try out? Right now I have a munchkin with the clear silicone spout. Basically she just chews on it.
A picture would be helpful too
TIA

Re: Best sippy cup for a 6 month old just starting out
DS was bottle fed. I skipped sippy cups and went right to a straw cup. His Dr doesn't like sippy cups because they are glorified bottles and a speech therapist told me that straw cups are better for oral development.
I started with the playtex lil grippers. Here is a link, can't post a pic cause I'm posting from my phone.

What? No sippy cup I couldn't wait for DD to use the cute ones we bought her. I hate all these rules!

I bought all different kinds....nubby, munchkin, straws...I bought them all
The only ones my kids really could drink out of were the playtex first sipster with the soft spout.

ds had born free bottles, first we bought the sippy spout for the bottle, then the platex sippy cup with handles then he went to the straw once he held it ok.

There are lots of people who gave/give them to their kids, and they are fine, no speech issues, no problems coming off them as they became older, etc. There are kids I know of that are 4/5/6 years old that still drink out of them. My DD had them and she had a speech delay, and one of the main issues was poor oral muscles. Her therapy used to include her drinking out of the thin loopy loop straws. She even used to drink danimals yogurts out of them to strengthen her mouth. With DS, I totally agreed with what the Dr suggested and was glad we were on the same page.
In the end it is whatever you're comfortable with for your own child.

This is what we mostly use. I introduced a sippy cup for water at 7 months. I first tried a soft spout and she just chewed on it. But she figured out how to use the straw right away.

Re: Best sippy cup for a 6 month old just starting out
I've heard about the issue with oral development and sippy cups. I plan on introducing the straw cup once she gets the hang of a cup in general. I also don't plan on letting her have the cup that often. So far I have only given it to her after dinner in her high chair. For some reason I felt like she is too young for the straw concept

My ped so not to use sippy cups either - he recommended the straw cups. He also said that we can use those little paper bathroom cups with an ounce of water to help DD learn how to drink from a cup. I haven't started her on water yet so I don't know how it'll work out.

So when are you supposed to start them on a straw cup??? DD is almost 6 months and I wanted to start giving her a sippy, or straw if I can!
She's not going to hurt herself with the straw??

My ped said to start at 6 months. I don't think they'll hurt themselves. They just have to learn how to do it... same way as eating off a spoon.

Yup. DS was 6 months and a few days when I started. It took a few weeks for him to get the hang of it.
Once he really knew what he was doing I started putting his afternoon bottle in it about 10 1/2 months. A few weeks later I started putting his morning bottle in too. By the time I transitioned him to milk I also moved his night bottle up to be during dinner, started putting it in the cup and *poof* a week before he turned one he was off the bottles and never looked back. It was great !!
And the best part is we can go anywhere and as long as I can find a straw he can drink. I don't have to worry that I don't have a cup with me.

Re: Best sippy cup for a 6 month old just starting out
I gave my DD the one with the straw-Playtex little grippers-and the problem is that she turns it up to drink from it....which means she is not getting anything out of the straw because the water is not near the end of the straw.
With a sippy cup, she turns it up to drink and is getting liquid.
I agree with what peds and speech therapist's say about using the straw cup but I just can't seem to get my DD to keep the cup down to drink from it.

DS has done the best with Nuby cups. I started him with the soft spout - ped didn't say not to and he didn't really get the straw at first - and then moved him to the straw cups.

This is what I am planning on doing - starting off with a soft spout and once she gets the hang of it and is drinking out of a cup more often, I will move over to the straw. Right now all she really does is play with it anyhow after her meals.

I never worried about DD hurting herself. The straw in the playtex one is really soft. Also, you can squeeze the platex one to get water to come up through the straw, so this is how we got DD to figure out how to use it. I'd squeeze it until she got the hang out of sucking from it.
