Being around Chemo Patients
We are TTC and my Stepfather was diagnosed with Leukemia yesterday. He starts Chemo today. Does anyone know if I can be around him while in the 2WW or once I get a BFP?
I'd prefer not to let my family know we are trying and don't want to ask them if I can avoid it.

Chemo is usually injections. Are you talking about radiation? I would suggest you call your Dr or sometimes your ealth insurance will have a number you can call to speak to a nurse

Thanks that's a good idea. It's definately not radiation, it's Chemo being administered via a shunt.

Of course you can be around him!!
Chemo's not something you can "catch". Even with radiation, you can be around them.
It is absolutely not transferred to another person.
There are many types of leukemia. You can find info at www.cancer.org so that you know what to expect from him.
Just stay away from him if you have a cold as their immune system is compromised.

I work with chemo patients and I am PG. I am told to wear nitrile gloves when touching patients as are all the staff PG or not. Pts after radiation I don't use any precautions.

What does Chemo or what could it give a person ??
I know when I was PG the first time, my uncle was undergoing massive chemo doases, I was always around him?

Nurses are told to do it because they could come in contact with some of the medicine through touch, it is mostly done as a precaution. If they are constantly around it and come in contact with it a lot it could have some harmful affects on the body.
Also another great site is www.curesearch.org it has a lot of information for patients and families about leukemia. One of the biggest things my brother Doctor said is to watch the sites you are visiting to make sure they are valid sites, because every doctor with a PHD thinks they have the answer and you can get a lot of misinformed information by reading the net. My brother has APL, which is a very rare form of leukemia. If you need someone to talk to or just someone to vent to, I am here anytime.

I am a Nurse and chemo is excreted through body fluids!!! So unless your going to play in the bodily fluids HAHA!! You should be fine!!

Med professionals are all over body fluids! 
I don't think there's any huge risk, I'd just be careful for peace of mind.
I was all over someone taking thalidomide and it didn't bother me when I realized what I did, but next time I remembered I wore gloves.
The risk is minimal so what you do is up to you.

DH's uncle was on radiation and no one was allowed in the room for more then 4 hours a day during treatment.
I'm sure for women TTC/PG the rule is stricter.
I don't think you have anything to worry about Chemo. DH's uncle started on Chemo and his DIL was PG, she was around him all the time.

when someone with prostate cancer has a seed implanted, i believe there is a risk (i know they say to stay away from kids, etc....) but that is different from Chemo. Technically, 'chemotherapy' just means 'chemical therapy'... which is anytime you use medication ('chemicals'). that would be like saying stay away from anyone who takes medication (though, granted, cancer meds are much stronger....). Anyway, the concern is usually with the Seed thats implanted in certain cases... not with the chemo.

I think that only applies if people want to sit on their laps...This is from WebMD relating to the seed implants:
Special Considerations
Close, prolonged contact (such as sitting them in your lap) with young children and pregnant women should be limited for the first two months after the procedure.
