Bathing suits vs. Rash guards?

Last summer my twins were like 3 months old so we didn't exactly hit up the beach all that often, but I am looking at bathing suits this year for vacation and for the summer and am confused as to the difference between those rashguard shirts and then just regular old bathing suits.

Is it a matter of sun protection or is there some odd baby surfing movement that I am not privy to?

What would you suggest for actual swimming and beach trips for a boy and a girl who will be 1+ years old?

Both of my boys have lily white skin - for me it's strictly a sun protection thing.

Once less spot to lather them w/ sunscreen. (the rashguards are usually SPF 50)

I also like the rash guards b/c it allows you to use less sun block.

Rash guards are the shirts.
They prevent burns... Even better than sunscreen.

Ok this makes sense now! I think I'll go this route as I'm already neurotic enough about sunscreen. Thanks for the feedback!

i only buy rash guard bathing suits for my kids..
my DD rarely wears a reg. bathing suits bc then i have to double the amount of sunscreen. we spend a lot of time at the beach/pool and they are so white! i feel the rashguard helps so much more with protecting them so for me it's a no-brainer.

We save the bathing suits for indoor pools. Rash guards for outside.

Re: Bathing suits vs. Rash guards?

I only have a boy and I am not sure I have noticed what they have for girls. He always wore a rashguard when he was little. They make so many cute ones that match the swimsuits. I do not buy them to be skin tight b/c I thought he hated the high neck, so just be careful about that. I am a bit upset that the kids really don't put them on in camp. I think that he will get sunburned in that area this year if we are not careful because he has never been exposed. I'm not sure if that is really a reason to not have used them. I will still have some rashguards for the beach & weekends.

ETA: he has one on in my avatar pic.

This made me laugh! Chat Icon

It's totally a matter of sun protection. It's best for them, plus, as an added bonus, it's easier in terms of applying sunscreen!

All summer long: rash guard + sun hat
