Baldwin school district
I'm looking at buying a home in Baldwin. Any feedback on Baldwin schools? I hear very mixed reviews.

Baldwin school district
Don't have any personal experience, but a friend of ours is in the process of switching their DD to Catholic school. They were very unhappy with the school. She is in 1st grade.

I find the good school districts are rated 8,9,10s
I see their HS scored a 5

Yeah. That's pretty much what I hear. I've heard favorable things about the elementary schools but less than favorable things about the highschool.

My good friend is a public school teacher and will not send her kids to the Baldwin schools. They go private.
Oh, and this friend is not white. I feel the need to point out that seemingly irrelevant fact because on LIF, "wouldn't send my kids to that school" is often code for "not white enough"

I live in Baldwin so I'll tell you what I think.
I believe that the elementary schools are very good. They go K-5. I haven't heard anything negative about the middle school and children on my block go there. The high school I haven't heard great things about. (but even so, several kids on my block go there)
When we purchased our house, we did so with the intention of staying until our DS was in middle school be we were concerned about his education once he got older. He's only 3 now.
I've thought about it now and then and have come to certain conclusions that work for me. I love my house. We have a great house. I also love my neighborhood. It is a mix of people who have lived here for 30-40 yrs and new younger families with children. 2 houses on my street sold within 1 month this past summer. If I were to try to buy the equivalent of my house in the next town over, Rockville Centre, it would cost me more than double what we paid and this is now with the market the way it is. It would NOT cost me $400K+ to send my child to private school. Even 2 children (i'm preg with DC2) It just doesn't seem worth it to move to another district given the cost.
So, for now I plan to send my child to public elementary school, in Baldwin. If I decide to go the private school route, I'm ok with that too. It will still cost me less than buying a house in another "better" district. You can get a lot of house in Baldwin and my experience has been completely positive.

I live in Baldwin Harbor and am expecting my first child in May. We will not send our kids to the middle school or high school, but here good things about the elementary schools. The middle school I here is even worse than the high school as far as gang activity, I'm as ocial worker and know some people who work in the district. I'm hoping changes by the time my kids are old enough, but I doubt it. It's frustrating too that Oceanside High school is right down the block form my house, but we can't send our kids there.....

Baldwin school district
I grew up in Baldwin and went to Baldwin public schools my whole life. Both my sister and I moved out of Baldwin, although our parents and both our in laws still live there as well as some family and friends. The property values have gone way down. The schools have been declining as well. Baldwin harbor (and Oceanside) has taken a big hit during hurricane sandy, so you do need to be really careful about flood damage.
My parents house in Baldwin Harbor burglarized twice and there are more crimes in baldwin than in Oceanside or RVC. I'm pretty sure there were a few murders recently as well. Something that happened much less frequently the 27 years I lived there. I don't remember hearing about ANY murders in Oceanside other than car accidents.
You do get a lot of house for your money but it is a double edged sword and it appears that Baldwin is still on a major decline.
