I don't live on LI, though I am in NY. We've had a farmer's market since before they were trendy. And stuff is always WAY cheaper than our supermarkets.

I know what you are talking about, since I am from a similar area. When I visit my family it's amazing how much produce 5 bucks can get you at one of their farmer's markets, and I would be supportive of low-income people shopping at farmer's markets if this was the case. They also don't have cupcake, wine, cheese and pie vendors set up either.

I have been to the area referenced in the article before, and I suspect their farmer's market is a lot like Long Island .........trendy, expensive, throwaway $$$ WANTS.

Maybe it's the state of the economy and ppl who have had a strong work history in the past feeling they are owed, but I see so much of this in my professional life with the people I provide services to.

They don't want their "needs" taken care of.

They want access to a pool and services "on hand just in case" too.

I also see family that live in mansions here on LI that don't feel that they should help out a disabled family member at all...........

Yet ppl who don't have a pot to piss in are ready to step in and do what it takes to help their family member out.

It really is a disgrace to me and I personally get resentful because DH and I practically live paycheck to paycheck and I pay half of that paycheck each week to family health insurance.

Yet there's this system called Medicaid that people have access to, and big companies support it because they make millions from it.

I should probably shut up though because I too am collecting a paycheck from it. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Sorry if I am ranting but this kind of stuff really hits a nerve with me, because I work with so many entitled people.

I do agree that the system needs a total revamping and people really need to learn what a want is vs. a need.

I truly feel bad for people in neighborhoods that don't have access to anything but candy and processed food.

That's a disgrace too.

And just another problem with our system.

I'm pretty sure with food stamps there is no restrictions on what type of foods you can purchase. So it's really none of her damn business if they want to uy a pie from her or not.

They can buy a box of cake mix and jar of frosting at a supermarket on sale for $3 combined, I do it all the time. A special pie from a bakery is not a need it's a want. There are times I make my own desserts instead of buying them from a bakery to save some money.

If I was spending other people's money, then I would definitely be more conservative with my spending.

I wholeheartedly agree! Good for her standing up for what she believes in.

Food Stamps do not allow you to purchase Hot cooked food that you can eat on premises, like food prepared at a deli counter etc.

When I was a teenager and a cashier at Grand Union in West Islip (I am dating myself here, this was over 20 years ago, remember grand union??), food stamps were like paper money and certain items weren't covered and had to be rung up separately. I *think* things like soda weren't covered, but I can't remember. Have things changed and now anything goes??

Before I say anything, I want to preface it by saying that my mom was on WIC when we were kids. It was for a very short time, but I distinctly remember eating welfare peanut-butter on white bread and box macaroni and cheese with hot dogs in it for like a year straight. But its not intended to be a system that provides whatever you want, best of the best. It is a system that provides enough to live on, until you can get back on your feet. But I think its silly to make welfare so comfortable and plush that it encourages people to stay on it for longer than they need to. It makes me batty when I see people shopping at Whole Foods with a welfare card. Welfare is intended to get you through a hard time, not to provide the luxury items, and yes, organic, specialty pies are a luxury.

I do understand what people are saying about the fruit/vegetable component and I teach in a Title 1 school (100% free lunch) and see what atrocious things that these kids bring for snack (bodega gummy worms and Hi-C?..or my personal fave: bag of marshmallows) I am completely for education and access to healthy food. I work in a food desert and its impossible to buy something healthy, but I can buy candy and liqueur 10 places. I am more commenting on the specific pie dilemma. I think that WIC or welfare should be limited to staples, that's all.

Ditto. When I was a kid and my parents split, we were on WIC too. You weren't allowed to use it for anything other than the staples. And I agree with a PP who said that if they shopped at a farmers market every week they'd be broke but here our tax dollars allow WIC recipients to do just that. Chat Icon

I think it's great that she's standing up for what she believes in. People who are on welfare can get stuff from the supermarket. I know someone who works off the books and still collects welfare and spends money on the most ridiculous things -- it really makes me mad!

ITA with this. If she wants to buy pie, she can get it at the supermarket with her EBT card.

I also agree that for every abuser of the system there are 10x more people who ACTUALLY need it. But just because I want to have an expensive dessert, doesn't mean the state should pay for it. How about the rest of us, not using EBT, that just can't afford that $25 pie?

ITA with what the baker did - she can refuse to participate in the program just like anyone else can. EBT is supposed to be there to make sure people are nourished. Pie is not nourishment. Sorry. And if pie is your nourishment, you just can't have gourmet.

Exactly. I happen to love the pies at Briermere Farms- but they are outrageously priced. So I make do with Entenmann's most of the time.
I will survive without a $25 pie.
And if I was at a point in my life where I qualified for WIC- I would most certainly realize that times were tough and hey- I can't have that $25 pie right now.
It stinks but it's life.
You can't always afford the luxuy items- and to ME- a $25 pie is a luxury item, nowhere NEAR a neccessity.

Re: Baker refuses to take EBT cards...

It's not mandatory that she accept EBT cards, so she's well within her rights to refuse. If the farmer's market is legally allowed to exclude her because of that then she can't complain about that either.

However, I get the feeling that this is more of a political stunt than a woman who is truly *just* standing up for what she believes in.

Well said! I too am all for helping someone get through a tough time, but going without a fresh pie is not desperation. I ate pancakes three nights a week and lived on a $20 a week grocery budget when I was in grad school. I didn't apply for food stamps expecting taxpayers to buy me pies. As someone else pointed out, if they really were trying to celebrate a child's birthday there are other options that are less expensive so the "pie for a party" argument is pretty weak. And for those saying the government shouldn't dictate what someone eats, I agree with that, but if they are handing out money to help with essential food purchases then it should be just for that - essential, not desserts and specialty items that are not critical to a healthy diet.

I agree with this, wholeheartedly. I have a full time job, as does DH. We are BARELY making our mortgage payments right now. BARELY. If I, a hard working person, cannot buy a $25 organic, fresh, specialty pie, then WHY should my tax dollars be buying one for someone else?? If it's 'for a party', which I think is complete BS, then they should buy one at the supermarket for half the price, or offer to bring a cake instead, which can be made for less than $5.

Baker refuses to take EBT cards...

I agree with her...welfare is the government assisting you in buying NECESSITIES to feed your family and survive. It is foolish to allow her to buy an unnecessary $20 pie when that $20 can buy 5 boxes of breakfast cereal for her family. And when you're in that situation, breakfast for a month should trump dessert. No question.

Yes, maybe it was her kid's birthday but we didn't have a ton of money growing up and often my birthday cake was a $2 Entenmann's cake. I never knew the difference!!

I think many feel that if most people are struggling and not
Receiving assistance and we can't afford fancy baked goods, and put pur money to needs- Lipa, heat, etc, then why should someone on assistance be able to indulge in a non-necessity? I can see that angle.

I get her point. We're talking about pie. Just because something is sold at a farmer's market doesn't make it some sort of nutritional staple. Pie is not a civil right. If you can't afford to pay for it yourself, maybe you shouldn't be shopping for pie. There was a time in my life when I couldn't afford to indulge in Starbucks whenever I wanted to. So I didn't. I didn't ask the taxpayers to buy it for me.

And if it was for a kid's birthday cake, I am sure the person in question would have no trouble buying a cake or pie at the supermarket with their EBT card.

Exactly.
