Just got back from the closing...and the lawyer (who is a friend of mine) told us that people almost always give the title closer $100, so we did that. I just wanted to try to do the right thing. Anyway, that was barely a dent in all of the costs we paid...we are officially broke again, but we are homeowners! Chat Icon

Congrats!

Re: back from closing

I had never heard of tipping either until I read it on LIW Home board. My attorney never told me to tip anyone and if he did I still would not have. I have to agree with pill on this one...tipping is out of control. That is his job and why would a title closer expect a tip? Can you explain to me exactly what the title closer does that he/she would need/expect a tip for? Should I be tipped for coming into work? Sorry to sound hostile just the whole tipping thing is out of control.

Thanks for the congratulations! We can't wait to move in!
As for the title closer, I don't know too much. I think they are there to handle in-person closings for a title company, make sure the file is complete and communicate with all parties. The woman who was our title closer today was making calls and going through paperwork- she was busy the whole time. I am not too sure about exactly what she was doing though. Towards the end of the closing, she gave us a small gift (candle holder and candle) and said congratulations. This was before we tipped her.

Re: back from closing

I work at a title company and I have to say that the practice of tipping closers makes no sense to me at all. I have no idea how this practice developed. If I ever find out, I'll let you know.

That said- the closers are independent contracters. They are not salaried employees of the title company. They only get payed about $30 or $40 by the title company. They have no health benefits, medical benefits, etc... They support themselves and their lives on LI through their tips. Whether or not you agree with it, that's how it is.

i asked a friend that is a RE attorney and he said that tipping IS customary but not madatory. there has only been very few closing that he handled when the buyers did not tip. i had NO idea as our attorney never told us to tip.
