Baby registry is like "begging?"

My mom just told me she wont like it if I register for some of the more expensive items, like a rocker, car seat, stroller, etc because it is like "begging"
Chat Icon
Is she kidding?

ed: Im not seeking out the most expensive things, but Im not going to skimp out if I like something that costs $20 more. And of course if I dont wind up getting these from the shower I will buy them, but why cant I register?? Its not begging - Its what people do!

My mom is being really crappy to me about having a shower and stuff and I'm getting so upset about it but I just think, they're just jealous because they didn't have registries when we were born! ;)

Just tell her that you want to put it on the registry so, if you don't get it, you can get it for a discount for completing the registry!

Re: Baby registry is like "begging?"

First of all that is such a mean thing to say. Everyone puts those things on their registry! People loooove buying baby gifts and lots of times a few people will go in on onebig gift together. If someone can't afford a big gift no one is forcing them to buy it.

Secondly, this seems to be a theme with your posts and frankly, I think it sucks and I am mad for you. This is the first grandchild, correct? This is a huge blessing and so exciting! I wish these people would snap out of it, pull the sticks out of their arses and celebrate this joyful time with you. Chat Icon

This is exactly what I was thinking. I'm sure there will be items in every price range so people can spend exactly what they're comfortable spending. As for bigger items, I'm hoping that people will go in together on bigger items so that they don't have to spend a ton. And yes, most people LOVE buying baby gifts and they want you to have the specific items that you want! Sorry your mom doesn't see it the same way. I hope you don't let it affect what items you put on the registry.

I'm sorry she said that to you. A registry is a wish list, a guideline for people who don't know what you need, what you want, etc. It's not a list of demands! Try not to get too upset over it, if she doesn't like it - tough cookies. Chat Icon

Yes, ITA! Im so sorry she said that to you. Chat Icon I think you should put on there whatever you want. If people dont want to get it because it cost too much they just dont get it, simple as that.

Wow! Sorry she said that to you!

As long as you don't just put really expensive items it's totally fine. Some people rather chip in and get a bigger item anyway. Plus you get a discount if they aren't purchased.

Re: Baby registry is like "begging?"

I have heard my mom comment on other peoples registry's about expensive items so, I was very careful with my bridal shower registry, because I was so scared I would offend someone. Then with my baby registry, I did what I wanted. I didn't go crazy, but there was certain things I wanted that where kind of expensive. Just make sure you have alot to choose from price wise. Ask for what you want. Alot of people like to chip in together to get the big priced items.
That was really mean of your mom to say you are begging.

I'd register for them! You never know if several people will want to chip in for a group gift of a larger item. My DH's aunts always chip in for the expensive stroller for the cousins. And my bridesmaids all chipped in for bigger things too.

Plus, stores like BRU, send you coupons to complete the registry after you deliver, so you can then buy those things at a discount if they're on your registry.

Re: Baby registry is like "begging?"

I agree with pps...
It's not begging.
Register for them.
If your mother has anything to say, use your "pregnancy - get out of jail - free card" and let her have a piece of your mind...
If this is the cr@p she's going to pull now, it'll only get worse when the baby's here. Trust me. My mother and your mother are probably twins separated at birth. Mine did the same shizz to me throughout my entire wedding & pregnancy. I finally had enough before DC was born and let her have it. She is far less intrusive and opinionated now... mind you, I've had to "remind" her a few times that it's my child, my family, my life. Not hers.

YOU are the only one not benefiting here. Register. For. Whatever. You. Want.

Sorry for my mini-rant... but reading your post made my heart ache for you... Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Baby registry is like "begging?"

Thanks everyone.
My mouth dropped when I heard her say that.

I dont think she is being malicious, she hasnt been to many bridal or baby showers aside from mine, I think she honestly doesnt know this is what happens.....

She sometimes comes up with things that make me think she lives in a bubble....

ed: I absolutely plan on putting a variety of price ranges on the registry. Mom is just opposed to the "expensive" things. Chat Icon

Re: Baby registry is like "begging?"

My mom lives in a bubble of work and her eccenrtic life. She exactly didn't say anything negative about my registry but she just didn't "get it" or really get ANYTHING about my showers, wedding, etc. All this stuff is so routine to me and to DH's fam. Sometimes I feel like my mom is from another planet. I just ignore her. Or sometimes freak out on her I guess, lol.

Re: Baby registry is like "begging?"

put what you want on if people wanna get it they will and if they dont they wont but i believe they give you a discount of some sort on the stuff you dont get from your registry so some of the big things that you need and probably wont get will be cheaper for you to buy in the end if they are on your registry .....i would just make sure you vary the prices and put some smaller stuff on too so there is a variety but def put the big stuff on as well!!

That's BS! I would have flipped if anyone said that to me. So she would rather you get stuff u dont want or already have and prob duplicates bc she's too proud to habe her dtr have a decent registry? My co workers have chipped in for things on my bridal registry which i love and use often.
Sorry i just got angry for you.

If you came up with the idea of a registry, I'd say "maybe" but this practice has been around long before you were pregnant. Of course you should put on more $ items bc people will group together and get it. If your mom was against the WHOLE entire registry process I would almost understand her thought process. The "too much $" idea isnt valid IMO. I did feel funny creating one both times as I feel a "bit" funny telling people what to buy me but I got over it....its done all the time. What are ya going to do. I see both sides of the fence. In the end, put it on your registry, thats my ultimate advice.Chat Icon

This was EXACTLY what I did with this baby. I made a registry not with the intention of people buying from it but using it for a completion discount. I "may" have needed 2 items and new bottles, feeding utensils etc...I received tons of gift cards for this baby and am planning to apply my discount to it. Registering gets you that discount plus I also received tons of free samples...totally worth it. Use this idea if it makes her feel more comfortable.

I'd really tell her that people may want to get together & buy something as a large gift. I got my stroller this way (4 people)... which was absolutely appropriate!

Honestly, I like seeing $50-$100 items on the registry & try to pick those up before others get to them.

Registries are suggested gifts that people who love you might want to purchase. People will spend the amount on your LO that THEY want to and they will decide if they want to even buy from the registry at all. There is nothing wrong with putting all of your wishes out there. I had a few groups of friends get together and pool their money to buy some of the more expensive items on my registry. Many people like the direction that registries give!

My thought is so what?

So what if SHE doesent like it? Its your life, your baby, your party.

EVERYONE knows that a registry is set for people who WANT to get you gifts. Even if you didnt have a shower, people would STILL get you gifts.

But dont worry about what your mom thinks. You should say to her something like "I wont really like it if you wear pink". She will say "what?". Maybe then you can use that to explain how YOU fel about what she said and how both suggestions are just silly.

is she seriousChat Icon Chat Icon that is not begging. you can put whatever you want on there. If people find the items to expensive that is their choice if they want to buy it or not. Nobody looks at a registry and feels forced to buy something they dont want to or cant afford. You register for whatever YOU want.Chat Icon

Re: Baby registry is like "begging?"

That's such strange thinking! I don't think your mom understands what "begging" is.

Even though I personally felt uncomfortable registering, I had to keep reminding myself that NO ONE ever looks at a registry and thinks so negatively about the parents-to-be. You are allowed and even encouraged to make a list of things you need and want for your baby without having your own mother make you feel greedy.

Re: Baby registry is like "begging?"

to avoid the argument I would just say. "I am going to put big ticket items on b/c after the shower is over the store gives you a completion coupon for items not bought so you can buy it yourself a lil cheaper" that should shut her up on that issue

...and if someone buys you something PERFECT

Ugh! So sorry she said this to you! I agree with the other posters - it's just a wish list to help people out. I would never ever feel like it's "begging". I guess you also have to take into consideration the generation she comes from - they didn't do registries then. I know my wedding registry was such a foreign concept to my mom too. Chat Icon
