Baby Nurse: Yay/Nay and Why/Why not?
If money wasn't an issue or it was a gift - would you have a baby nurse/post-partum doula to help you when the baby comes?

Nay... For the simple reason is that I'm perfectly capable of doing it myself.

Now, now... don't you know this is a forbidden question?
eta: no, i wouldn't. i wouldn't want a stranger in my house during that delicate time. i typically don't like people in general, so for me it just wouldn't be comfortable.

No, I don't feel its necessary. However if I didn't have a DH that helped out a ton maybe I'd feel differently?? I don't know. It's just DH and I in Maryland (fam is in NY) but we've made it through without any other help, no problem.

Baby Nurse: Yay/Nay and Why/Why not?
It's not for me. But if I had the money I would use it towards a cleaning lady/food shopping lady/cook for me lady.

Re: Baby Nurse: Yay/Nay and Why/Why not?
I don't think so....I like knowing I can handle it on my own. I think the only benefit would be you actually can sleep a little!!! But knowing me, I would not be able to sleep if I heard the baby and knew someone else was taking care of him/her.

Re: Baby Nurse: Yay/Nay and Why/Why not?
I am going to have someone stay with me when I get home to help me. It was offered its not a doula or anything just a family member that would like to help. I am actually considering not to have this person until after I go back to work. I kinda want to experience this on my own and deal with it with DH...I know it will be hard and SIL keeps telling me I'm crazy for no accepting help at the beginning but its a personal preference and I rather do it by myself and embrace every moment

That's a great idea! I'd rather do the baby stuff and have someone else do the rest.

Re: Baby Nurse: Yay/Nay and Why/Why not?
This was an issue in my family a few weeks .. or maybe months ago actually. My mom called me up to say my grandmother wants to pay for one for a few weeks after the baby comes home. They were both really excited about the idea and thought I would be thrilled. When I said I did NOT want a baby nurse, my mom tried convincing me I was making some big mistake. Eh. I'll handle it. I don't like the idea of someone I don't know just living in my house for a few weeks. I also would not be able to trust anyone. I think having some stranger in the house would stress me out 1000000x more than a newborn. A friend of mine had one and I honestly thought it sounded horrible - but different strokes ......
eta: like others have said, I would much rather put the money towards a maid/errand lady! Come for a few hours to make my life easier and GO HOME!

Baby Nurse: Yay/Nay and Why/Why not?
When I came home with DS I could not have imagined having anyone else taking care of the baby. I loved every sleepless second of it! I'm pregnant again and DS will be 14 months when the baby is born. At that point I could probably use some help, but I still don't want one.
I did however have a cleaning lady come a few days before my due date!! Life saver! And who ever brings food is awesome!!

Baby Nurse: Yay/Nay and Why/Why not?
I guess I'm in the minority when I say I would ABSOLUTELY want one being that this is my first. While I know I have my mom and MIL for help I would rather have someone who isn't going to push the "we didn't do that when I had kids 100 years ago". I'd rather have someone who isn't going to really get up in my business and help me on how to get him to sleep and on a schedule and help me feed him and answer any questions I have for the first week without me having to call someone who just knows from having children YEARS ago or asking someone who only has one child since all children are different. My mom had one when she had my older sister and she said it was more of a "I have a question" then the nurse taking care of the baby.
Also, DH has been working 10 hour days, 6 days a week and probably will continue to do that after DS is born since I'm still out of work. I would like that extra help, ESPECIALLY if I have a c-section.

Re: Baby Nurse: Yay/Nay and Why/Why not?
I always go back to the people in the bush LOL makes me laugh every time - Bethenny said that once on her show about child raising and it's so to me. But yeah, the people in the bush didn't have that and they were OK and neither did my mom with three kids. I think, if my mom did it, I can do it. And I feel like part of the enjoyment of it is the experience of me and hubs learning and doing it ourselves. And we are sure to have happy accidents and things of that nature - just like when we had to train our puppy LOL you should have seen us! What a riot! But it bonded us and it was part of the whole fun of the experience. DH and I are doing our homework - reading books, DVDs, taking parenting classes, infant classes, all that crap - I have to say, it's been enlightening so far and really a cool thing.
I do agree though with the poster who said if they had the money they'd do the cleaning thing -- now THAT I know I don't need help with, and I know I can do it on my own but there's nothing to be said of the 'experience' of cleaning so yeah I would love a cleaning person.

Re: Baby Nurse: Yay/Nay and Why/Why not?
A post partum doula takes care of mom not the baby. They might do light baby work but they are there to make sure mom can do all the bonding with the baby. Make light meals, breast feeding support, hold baby during shower, baby care education, etc.
I just had my third and I really wanted a post partum doula and even though we had ILs staying here, we should've hired one. Sore spot for me. So I say yay to pp doula.
A baby nurse, no. I can and want to take care of and feed my baby.

LOL this, exactly. Plus I was BFing, so really there was nothing a nurse could have done for me.

Re: Baby Nurse: Yay/Nay and Why/Why not?
With my first, I absolutely did not want one and in the end I don't think I needed one. It was such an amazing experience to do it on our own. The first couple of weeks were some of best in my life... sleepless and all. I'd say you should give it a try without one! If it's too overwhelming, you can always consider It later on.
This time around is a bit different... My DS is 2.5 and we are expecting twins in 8 weeks or less. I'm not sure if I want to go the baby nurse route, but I really feel like we will need additional help around the house and stuff. We're going to evaluate the situation once the babies are born to see what will work best.

Re: Baby Nurse: Yay/Nay and Why/Why not?
Oh my. This is bringing back memories of the drama-fest that ensued when I brought this topic up last summer.
Anywho, I had one, I loved her, and I would 10000000% do it again for my next DC. DH and I had zero experience caring for a baby, so we felt it important to have someone help us. We had her for 2 weeks, live in, and she was wonderful. I had a c-section, so the first week she spent really taking care of the baby and me. The second week she taught me a ton of stuff. She also got Sophie on a schedule from day 7 (super controversial, I know, but hey, it worked for Sophie and us).
Send me an email if you want more detailed info about what she did, how much it cost, etc.
