Atria Assisted Living

Does anyone have experience with Atria Assisted Living in Huntington or Plainview ?

Have to place FIL in a facility and I'm going into this blind, it's all new to me.
He hoarded up his apartment once again and destroyed it, so he cannot go home.

If not this group, any other assisted facility that is nice, clean, your LO happy there. Nassau, western Suffolk are fine.

FIL doesn't have a lot of money, so once it runs out, it will have to be Medicaid payment.

When we were looking into place for my grandmother (not in NY), Atria was very expensive. It was nice in Florida and since they are a chain I'm sure there are certain standards. And I if I remember correctly she would not be able to use Medicaid in her assisted living. She only was able to get the medicaid when she moved over to the nursing care at the end.

Have you looked at Dominican Village? We visited there for my mom and it was so nice, but my mom passed away right before she was supposed to move in.

I have a friend who used the Atria in Huntington for her mom. She was very happy there. Eventually she needed more care than they offered there.

There are almost no assisted living facilities that will accept Medicaid as payment, so if you want him to be able to stay in the same place when his money runs out, you will have a very hard time finding a place. There is one in Suffolk but it is far from what I would call "nice." Will he likely be ready for a nursing home when his money runs out? There are many more options for nursing homes that accept Medicaid. Good luck - it's not an easy process.

ETA: When we were looking for DH's sister, The Arbors was by far the least expensive. We looked in Hauppauge but there is a Westbury location

my grandmother is in the arbors in bohemia. It runs her around $5400 a month. Most places seem to run between $5000-10000 per month. We priced the bristol and things like managed medicine was an extra fee a month.

He's pretty sick right now, and this sounds so horrible, but DH and I wish that he would just pass. There's a whole lot of background as to why we feel this way. Basically, the old man has no quality of life.

I guess we are just going to have to get the apartment cleared out, and fixed in a hurry.

its very important to take a tour, ask the following: how can they accommodate his needs now, what if his needs change such as needing more care or someone to cook, clean, give medications to him, can they provide that. If he developed Dementia can they take care of him. All question should relate to present and future care. how many nurses to pt ration if he is in the nursing home area.

My FIL was at the Atria in Huntington after a stroke and we found it to be really nice. It is $$. Was your FIL a veteran by any chance? I know we received benefits for that.

My husband's aunt was in the Atria in Lynbrook for a couple of years and then we moved her to Somerset Gardens because it was cheaper. Then her dementia got worse and she transferred to a nursing home. But Assisted Living is very expensive. She went through all her savings and the profit from the sale of her co-op in less than 6 years.

I'm so angry at FIL.
If he wasn't a hoarder, if he didn't destroy his apartment, he could have lived at home with an aide and someone to come in and clean regularly. He's even hoarding in the hospital ! Every day I come in and throw stuff away. The man doesn't use straws, yet he's accumulated about a dozen because they come with his meal trays.

He's barely got any savings, doesn't own a home, no veteran status. DH and I are not using up our savings to pay for him. We don't have children and it is our responsibility to make sure that we have enough resources to take care of ourselves when we get old and not be a burden on our nieces and nephews.

We have an appointment to see the Atria this Saturday, and we'll just take it from there. If he has to go into a nursing home to get Medicaid, then so be it. after reading these responses, I'm leaning towards rushing to fix up the old man's apartment just to make his finances last longer, but DH is dead set against it.

I very much appreciate everyone's responses. That's what is so great about this forum, strangers can be very helpful when needed.

I would talk to the social worker at the hospital. You can say he has no where to go and see what they say. I hope for your sake you are not in PA as they do have parental filial laws which would make you responsible for a parents finances.

I think you should start by applying to Medicaid, which may allow him to stay in his apartments with aides. I suggest speaking with an elder care attorney, since a consultation would probably be free.

ETA: Atria is private pay, so if he does not have assets and you are not willing to pay, then he won't be eligible for admission.

There are certain assisted livings in Long Island that Accept Medicaid. Amber court in west bury, maple point in rvc, island in Hempstead, the hamlet in medford. Try looking into them.

Agree with previous poster. I'm familiar with Amber Court in Westbury. They will take someone in private pay and convert them to Medicaid when $ runs out.
