There is a nice one on Montauk Highway in West Babylon. Sunrise Assisted Living.
My mom use to go there, and I have been there a few times for the events. It is very nice there.

The Medicare website is a good resource. It rates all the homes. It's a good start. Link

Re: Anyone on here famliar with Assisted Living places
Unfortunately, yes.
I had to put my grandmother in an assisted living facility after my mother passed away and her Alzheimer's was starting to progress. I originally had her in an Atria. While the facility was nice she was unable to stay there because she started to wander and they couldn't handle that. I totally get it. She was then transferred into another Atria that had a dementia ward, i.e. a locked facility. I will tell you it is expensive, very expensive. Like $4000 a month for a shared room. The facility was nice except for that ward. It smelled of covered up urine and everyone was corralled. When they raised the price, I had to look for another place.
I found through some person that works in Suffolk county, who recommended the Babylon Beach House which is on Yacht Club road. The place is a converted motel. Although it wasn't as nicely appointed as the Atria or the other chain facilities, I felt she was better cared for. They had activities there and people were happy. They were more attentive the peoples needs. They knew my grandmother and weren't faking it. It was a relief for me.

One of my grandmother's is at The Arbors in Bohemia. I think it's really nice. The rooms are really big and you can bring all of your furniture. They also have lots of activities.

My grandparents were in there too. My father was pretty happy with them (minus a few minor things). Unfortunately, they do not give that much assistance (I believe 1.5 hours of med assistance per week or something like that) and after my grandmother passed away, my grandfather's health and alzheimers deteriorated. He is now at Nesconset nursing home.

I used to work at Gurwin Assisted Living in Commack. It's like a hotel. Very $$$ though.

Re: Anyone on here famliar with Assisted Living places
I would stay away from Atria. My grandmother was there until last year. On the surface it is beautiful. Underneath...they are all about the $$ (about $4000 a month for nothing), the cleaning service is awful, they often replace the "meals" with bagged lunches they eat in their rooms, and on numerous occasions they have the residents on "lock-down" due to illnesses going around. HTH

Actually the other place we pulled my grandmother out of was Atria.
The thing my parents rave most about is the staff.

You may also want to look at Dominican Village in Amityville. That is where we are thinking of having DH's grandmother go...also pricey but very nice.
