Re: At what age
I'm on the late side with everything because I'm paranoid, so I wanna say 3. Even at 3.5, I like to go up and down with DD when I can.

Re: At what age
My DS has been going alone since 2 yrs old. He's always been very coordinated.
My older one was much weaker with motor skills, and I helped him on the stairs until he was like 4 years old.
So I guess it depends on the child.

At what age
She's been going up and down our basement stairs since age 1.5 but never alone. I am always right beside her. At 2 yrs old I still don't let her do it alone because our stairs do not have a hand rail. I would never forgive myself if she fell off them

Dd is 2.5 she can go up and down the basement steps by herself but I never let her alone. It's a long way down. Yesterday she snuck about half way up without me and I got so nervous.

Re: At what age
It was prob 3.5 for me. My DD is super super cautious so she goes very slow. She's always been that way. One of my biggest fears is her falling down our stairs onto the tile floor.

DS1 - 3.5 (but still had to be careful for his younger brother DS2 - 2.5
Now at 5 and 3 I have gates, but they're never closed. I close it at night, but don't lock it in case they ever walk around half asleep coming to my room.

At what age
DD is almost 3. For the past few months she's been going up the stairs by herself on occasion but they're not carpeted and we rarely go up there so she doesn't get much practice. It does freak me out though and she definitely doesn't go down by herself.
Last month we went away and the house we rent has 3 floors with carpeted stairs that are more like half a floor at a time and she did them by herself up and down. Usually she was with other kids but I wasn't going to stay with 100% of the time so she did it and and I was surprisingly not that nervous. The 2 or 3 steps on the first floor with concrete floors made me more nervous.

Re: At what age
We moved into a split when DS was 19 months old. Within a few months he got really good at doing steps by himself. He's 26 months old and does them alone now all the time. I try to watch him on the wood ones, but those are being carpeted later this week anyway. He's fine on the carpeting, as long as he's paying attention!

Re: At what age
probably a little over 2 years of age (and she was physically delayed). she is so good on the stairs and there was no stopping her anyway. We let her climb up alone but I usually like to watch her come down, that scares me more lol

Re: At what age
DD learned to climb up the stairs at 9 months. As soon as she was walking, she learned to hold the railing and walk and up and down alone as long as another adult was beside her or near-by. She's been doing that since about ~14-15 months. She's now almost 4 and we have no concerns. She knows not to run or rush so she doesn't fall. She's slipped a few times and she learned from that mistake, but that was just a step or two - no major fumble.

Less than a year. She mastered crawling up and down before the age of 1 and has always loved stairs. She's a dare devil but with stairs has always been careful.

Re: At what age
I'm really careful with stairs. A fall can be a BIG thing.
At 4.5, DS ends up playing on them & I keep them locked off with a gate (that he knows how to open). Fortunately, we are downstairs most the day & no toys upstairs, so it has limited interest.

Re: At what age
My kids were 2 I allowed them to do this. I would be right there with them though. My older one was even climbing up our pull down attic stairs right after his 1st birthday.

At what age
not yet. DD just turned 2 and i still walk in front of her when i go down the stairs and behind her when she walks up. I also always hold her hand when we go down the stairs. She's perfect walking up, but the stairs are ceramic tiles and she doesn't always pay attention and sometimes misses a step. hence why my heart skips a beat when she does and why i still hold her hand. but my nephew is 27 months and has been going up and down the stairs since he was 2 like a pro. i guess it really depends on the child.

DS is 3.5 yes and goes on his butt. He has delays and can do them standing but he is more comfortable on his butt. He's been doing them alone about 6 months.
