Asbestos Removal - Need Recs Please!

We have some asbestos covering some pipes in our basement that we would like removed. Ultimately, we would like to turn the basement into a playroom for our .

I did a search on here, and it seems that a bunch of people had asbestos removed, but no one listed a contact / company.

If you has asbestos removed form your home, who did you use? We got an estimate from Branch Services in Bohemia already, but we want to get another estimate before moving forward with anything.

We have asbestos around the steam heating pipes in our basement. As for removing it - we didn't. Everyone told us it would be $$$ so we held off and held off. We JUST finished our basement about 2 weeks ago and based on how we laid out the space all of the pipes got enclosed into sheetrock boxes so it wasn't worth removing the asbestos to begin with. There is a small strip that is still visible inside a closet area but dh wrapped that pipe in duct tape a few years bag and it is still holding strong. After researching the removal process I think we estimated it was going to be $2-3k - DH read up somewhere that you can paint it or tape it (like we did with duct tape) to encase any possible loose fibers.

Sorry I can't be of more help... But thought I would share our non-removal theory with you!

We knew about the asbestos going into the house but our engineer missed other MAJOR things along the way so they are all bad...

As for the house - our house is ancient as well - circa 1920's... We do not have asbestos around the boiler itself but our boiler is OLDDDD, but we do have the steam pipe the runs around and across the whole basement for the heat. That pipe was/is encased in asbestos. As for moving the pipes - we didn't. We had no plans to change from steam heat to electric or hot water baseboard so it would have been pretty impossible to alter the pipes in any way. They need a very specific pitch for the water to rise and fall to the radiators. It was somewhat of a construction challenge for us as the pipes ran the perimeter of the entire basement but they were not exactly on the border - they were about 3-4 ft in from the walls.

Old houses are a PITA but the charm is great, isn't it!
