Are you green-er than last year?

OK, this isn't another debate about what is or isn't green, or who is or isn't green. This is about deltas.

Between all the discussions on this forum, and watching a lot of shows, I am definitely making strides to be green, and I am certainly more green than I was last year. There's always more we can do, but I am planning on getting dual-flush toilets, ceiling fans to cut down on A/C, low VOC carpets, no VOC paint, bamboo flooring, etc on our new reno this year. A year or so ago, I would never have bothered looking into these things.

Anyone else "greener" than last year?

Yes. I was to some extend due to my frugal and personal motives but now I am more "dedicated" to it.

Definitely. I'm slowly replacing all of my light bulbs with energy efficient light bulbs and I'm toting my tote bags to the grocery store...

Re: Are you green-er than last year?

yes!

aside from a list of growing things i'm doing or not doing to be green... my favorite green/frugal thing to do is:

walk to the second-hand store and buy a sweater made from fibers i can not afford and UN-DO the sweater and RE-PURPOSE the yarn to make things i would not normally have.

i have a 100% silk sweater from re-purposed yarn and i have a 100% cashmere sweater waiting to be turned into a lovely lacey scarf for next fall

Absolutely greener than last year. We have been really trying. Our biggest thing since Nov. has been driving in the HOV lane to work together. DH & I work in the same office. Changed all of our bulbs and many other things. We are def. doing are part much more than we were last year.

I would say so. We changed our bulbs. We are using organic fertilizers only on our lawn and no weed killers (thus we have weeds). We're installing an attic fan to take some heat out of the upper part of the house. I walk whenever possible and order some stuff online rather than driving to get it. I'm also using vinegar and baking soda to clean with when possible--they really work well on some things!

So yeah, I guess we are.

I think the important thing is that people are becoming more aware of the environment, and doing what they can to help. There is ALWAYS more that you can do. Even super-green people like Ed Begley Jr. could do more.

I think if everyone just tries a little bit and makes an effort to be more green, it will have a profound effect on our environment.

Im not a big knitter at all, but this is a brilliant idea... some truly hideous sweaters would be great for scarves (my knitting is limited to rectangles and squares).

Yes, without a doubt!

Actually DH just installed our Geotherm Heating/Cooling System in our house.......so at least we can save tons of oil that way.

(thus we have weeds)

Good for you, seriously.

I don't know who ever put it in people's minds that they shouldn't have ANY weeds. That that is the goal. It's an unrealistic and wasteful idea.

My goal is 80% cultivated grass/shrubs/trees/groundcover and 20% weeds. I'm currently ahead of my goal.

I'm absolutely greener than last year, because we became homeowners and I've been able to take the green ideas to a larger scale.

One of the things I've been concentrating on has been to research products before I buy them to cut down on the possibility of me throwing them away sooner. Something I took away from that link “The History of Stuff” that someone posted a while back. We're trying not to buy anything "disposable".

We just bought his and hers bicycles too and we intend on using it for trips around town. It's only 3 miles to all the big stores on 347, that's my short term goal. To build my stamina and get some kind of rack to hold purchases from the mall if I need them.

I could go on, but I'm not going to turn this into a "this is what I'M doing" post. Chat Icon

Re: Are you green-er than last year?

Hmm, just realized ordering stuff on the Internet rather than going to a store myself if it involves lots of driving isn't so green. Someone still needs to drive it to my house, and there is packaging involved. Guess we just save time and gas money.

But I would say there are lots of new things we are doing this year. Having a baby had a lot to do with it--I just don't want to put chemicals on our lawn or spread them around our house as much. Who knows how some things will affect him?

Definitely! DH and I have done some things to live "greener". It all starts with the small stuff and eventually will be come a way of life. We're actually enjoying being more conscious.

yes and I plan to keep evolving.
I'm hoping that the buzz & trendiness of the green movement lingers in peoples lives & doesn't go out of style when its not "in" anymore.
