Are you going to breastfeed?
And where do we learn how to do it?

Re: Are you going to breastfeed? w/poll
I am, it came very naturally to me with my daughter. They have people in the hospital who can help you after birth, and there are classes you can take before.

Re: Are you going to breastfeed?
I plan to breastfeed...I heard from a friend about a wonderful lactation consultant that gives a class at Stony Brook that she felt was very helpful that I plan to take before the birth...

Re: Are you going to breastfeed?
Take a class and read a few books. You should be prepared IMO. You need to know that it can be a bit hard at first but those struggles are all worth it.

Re: Are you going to breastfeed?
I read a ton of info while preggo. I had a c-section, I had spoke w/ the nurse before hand on the importance of the baby latching on ASAP.
Baby was brought to me within 45 min of birth with a lacation lady present. He latched immediately...we worked on positions and technicalities later.

Re: Are you going to breastfeed?
I plan to. With my son I was only able to pump but the lactation nurses help you after birth. I know my sister had problems breastfeeding my niece because her breasts were so large but she was able to pump for a little bit.

Re: Are you going to breastfeed?
Absolutely, both of them, which will be virtually round the clock for the first three weeks but I feel that it is that important. I can always sleep later...lol.
My MIL breastfed all three of her kids at a time when formula was really being pushed on women as the better alternative (1960's), both of my SIL's did and my BF also breastfed for a year so I have a great support system.

Re: Are you going to breastfeed?
I am going to try for the first 6 weeks and then try to mix breastfeeding and bottle feeding (pumping breastmilk) thereafter since I will be back at work.
We signed up for classes at LIJ and I was told that they help in the hospital.

Re: Are you going to breastfeed?
I am and I did. I took a class at my hospital and bought a few books to read and have with me inthe hospital. I felt very prepared, which was good, because the LC wasn't in until my last night at the hospital (where she just checked latching)
I did it for almost a year with DS, but I think what helped was not making those goals in the beginning. My first goal this time will make it to the 2 week mark (when the pain subsides and the first 3 days are the most important - for the colostrum) - then to 6 weeks - then 3 months- then 6 months - etc. Smaller goals are easier to obtain and be successful with.
good luck
