Are you avoiding "popular names"?
I really love the name "Isabelle" if I have a girl but everytime I tell people they comment on how common the name has become. Are you avoiding trendy names or just selecting what you like?

We are just trying to decide on something we like which is a challenge in itself! If you love Isabelle for a girl use it! Don't worry about whether or not it is popular!! It's a beauitful name!

i attempted to avoid popular names but Emily was really the only girl name that DH and I agreed on. so DD is Emily which was in the top 10. surprisingly i dont know any other baby Emily's right now. i feel like even though its in the top names its falling off a bit which I like. i mean she will prob end up being "Emily R." in school but it is what it is! she really is an Emily and I cant imagine having gone with any other name.

we chose Isabella Grace as our daughter's name. As far as middle name's go, "Grace" seems to be super popular right now. Same like "Rose". We chose Isabella because it was one of the few names that we both loved. We had such a hard time coming up with a name that we both liked. My sister had playfully mentioned months ago to me that Isabella as become super popular thanks in part to the Twilight movies. I've never read the books nor seen the movies, so this really meant nothing to me. But after she said it, and I mentioned my LO's name to other people who were fans of the movies, they all asked me if I was a fan too and if that played a part in us choosing that name. I can't believe how many people would think I would name my daughter after a movie character - but I guess enough people do it to merit even asking the question.
Bottom line, if you like the name, use it. What is popular today, won't be popular 10 years from now when a new crop of names become popular. Although I anticipate there being at least a few Isabella's in my LO class when she goes to school since I believe its the #2 or #3 name in the top 20 right now, lol

The non-popular names are now popular so there is really no avoiding "popular" names.

We named our son Aidan what do you think
If we were going to have a girl the second time around her name would have been Emma another popular name.
We didnt care if the name was popular or not

We picked a name that we liked. It isn't in the top 10...and even if it was I would still go with it since there were very few names that we actually agreed on.

Re: Are you avoiding "popular names"?
We are naming DS Michael John. I don't think it gets much popular than that. DH is Michael John the II so the baby will be Michael John III.
If we had a girl her name would've been Emma Kate. Emma is so popular now but DH really loved that name and I really liked Kate and it fit well together.

Re: Are you avoiding "popular names"?
I'm a Stephanie in the era of Stephanies, and I hated it. So I gave my kids mostly unpopular names, but still classic if you kwim.
That's not to say I won't use a popular name if it appeals to me. I named my DS Ryan and there are a million Ryans.

Re: Are you avoiding "popular names"?
We tried to avoid the top 10, but the challenge is, names are very local and regional. So a top 10 name on Long Island might not even make top 50 nationally and vice versa.
We picked something outside the top 10 for sure, but I think it's pretty popular in this area. It wouldn't surprise me if baby knows someone else with this name.
Also, it's hard when you pick a name that becomes popular immediately after you use it. Silly example, but we named our cat (a human name) 4 years ago and now it is a top 10 boys name. We thought it was kind of unique at the time.
So I guess I am trying to say, go with what you love, you can't really change or influence what's going on around you.
I had a popular 80's name and my sister and brother had unique names. There were many breakdowns at stores when sister couldn't get a personalized magnet or other piece of junk.

The name we picked for DD1 wasn't too popular when we picked it but was really popular when she was born.
The name we are probably giving DD2 is now in the top 10, but we both love it so we don't care.
I say go with what you love. There is a reason names are popular - because they are nice names!

Re: Are you avoiding "popular names"?
Definitely pick a name you love first and foremost but for myself, I naturally tend to sway towards names that are more unique and uncommon. I shy away from very popular names but if there was a popular name I was in love with, I wouldn't hesitate to use it.

I like very old names, which are making a comeback as popular names. I don't care. I just like what I like and don't care if it's popular or not!

Re: Are you avoiding "popular names"?
I avoided Top 10 names but that was my choice. I think DDs name is still in the top 20 and once we decided it we met so many people with her name.
I loved the name Isabella and I thought I picked the perfect name.... Isabella Marie... until I saw twilight. Sheesh! Even the same middle name!! I still love the name Isabella and may choose it as a middle name if I have a girl.
But it was my choice to "avoid" the top 10 names. Who knows how names are currently trending names may be on there that weren't before. If you truly love a name, go with it.

Re: Are you avoiding "popular names"?
For girl's names, yes. There are so many pretty names out there. I didn't want my DD to be one of a dozen with the same name. Boys names are harder and I feel like there are less of them.
