Are movers necessary?

We have a decent sized 2-bedroom apartment and are moving into a house.

We have one couch, 2 loveseats, one armchair 2 beds, and 3 dressers. In addition, there's all the other boxes and bins and stuff (clothing, kitchen things, you get the idea...)

DH wants to hire movers. My dad just wants to rent a U-Haul for us and move everything ourselves. We're not going all that far - about 6.5 miles, so we can make a few trips back and forth in one day. I would really like to NOT pay movers to do what I think we can so on our own.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

Re: Are movers necessary?

Totally not necessary.

We did a LOT of the boxes, etc. ourselves, but we had the movers do the furniture - we had tons, including an extra heavy DR & bedroom set. PLUS couches that needed to go down the deck off the second floor.

DH & I moved several times in our relationship...this move to us was our final - we wanted to be treated and not bother moving the heavy furniture ourselves....Chat Icon

Re: Are movers necessary?

I don't think they are necessary.

We had some friends and family members help us the day of the big move.

We also brought over a lot of boxes (ie: kitchen stuff) the week before.

Re: Are movers necessary?

We didn't hire movers when we moved into our house. Just a lot of people and a big UHaul.

DH, his BIL and I moved our things out of a 2 BR fourth floor walk up. It was rough, but it's doable.

Not necessary at all. I paid $175 for the whole weekend to rent a UHaul and we moved everything ourselves with help from family. We saved ourselves sooo much money!

I agree, movers may make things much easier, but you'll pay for it! Even for OUR long move...we're renting a huge U-Haul and just going for it!!! It's going to be a huge caravan...the U-Haul, my car, and Danny's truck Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I don't agree with that... when I moved from my first apartment to my 2nd one, and then moved out of my apartment into my house, I refused to give my $$ to movers that were charging me a ton. We rented a UHaul, got some friends and moved me to the house. I had a flight of stairs and a couple of iffy corners to manuever and we did just fine.

I moved about 5 times in 7 years, my picking up boxes days are over. For that type of job, I would check Criags list or the penny saver for guys with vans you pay by the hour instead of a traditional moving company.

Re: Are movers necessary?

If DH wants to hire movers it may be necessary. He'd be expected to do the lifting, so if he doesn't want to than it may be worth the price to make him happy.

We've always hired movers. I know I'm not lifting the furniture!

Re: Are movers necessary?

DH and I moved my stuff in myself, and for my whole life, I have been doing moves with the help of friends and family. We did the last move when I was 37, and I thought it was too much honestly.

But, we will move again soon, and now I'm 39 and pregnant, so I feel it's time to hire movers. Just too old to still do this!

Seriously though, for what you said you have if you get some friends or family to help, you can probably do it yourselves.

Re: Are movers necessary?

I did both as I moved "often". I would not bother moving stuff myself though anymore unless you have a bunch of friends helping you.

I think anything with several pieces of big furniture , I will leave to the movers as long as it does not cost me more than $500.00

well we almost lost a big screen TV trying to move it outselves down a flight of stairs- and those cost over $2K back then- so the price of movers are worth it if you have big stuff and a tiny space IMO

Re: Are movers necessary?

Helpful but not necessarily necessary. The question you need to ask is do you have any really heavy furniture that will be a real burden on your DH and whoever helps?

If you want to save money why don't you rent a uhaul and move things like TV's and boxes yourself and just have them move your larger furniture like bedroom sets, dining room sets etc.

Re: Are movers necessary?

Thans for all the replies! I didn't ever even want movers and neither did DH until his dad mentioned it. Dh and I have no problem lifting furniture and stuff.

We are on the first floor of a 2-family house, so stairs are not going to be that much of an issue.

Looks like we'll be saving ourselves some money by doing it ourselves! (with the help of family and friends, of course!)
