Anyone Using a Midwife After Watching Business of Being Born?
I saw the Business of Being Born last week and am now thinking maybe a midwife might not be a bad idea.
Anyone seen that and decide on switching to a midwife? They do give you a more personal service and so far I've not heard of anyone regretting using one....
The tough part is finding a good one! There are so few of them!

What is it that you don't believe in them about?
I used a Midwife (Stony Brook Midwives) and thought they were AWESOME! They support any decision you make regarding your birth and are just so caring

maybe i just worry - A LOT
and g-d forbid if anything wasnt going totally right they have to get a dr. anyway so I'd rather just have the dr. there from the start

That's what I heard too, midwives give you as much time as you need to deliver naturally and don't pressure you into taking drugs for induction or having a c-section. They are very widely used overseas unlike here in the U.S. OBs have a tendency to go by a certain schedule and do what seems more convenient for them.

That's what I heard too, midwives give you as much time as you need to deliver naturally and don't pressure you into taking drugs for induction or having a c-section. I should clarify, I had an epidural and pitocin  Those were my choices though. Water broke, contractions came on, STRONG, had an epi, contractions pretty much subsided so we agreed on the Pitocin. I liked that the minute I said I wanted an Epi they didn't try to talk me *out* of it

I am using one but I haven't seen that yet. I had a midwife with my daughter and will do the same with this baby. I have no interest in using a doctor.

I watched it and although I found it informative I have not changed my mind about a midwife. I feel more comfortable with being in a hospital with a medical doctor and I love my OB's so I'm happy with my choice. But that's just me!!

I want a doctor from the get go. Never considered a midwife. Never will. I am sure they do wonderful work and to each their own, but I feel more settled with an MD.

As I understand you do get a more personal level of care from midwives, they provide information, physical and emotional support throughout your pregnancy and after. And they can do the same things that OBs can do like write prescription and send you for the necessary prenatal tests. I think the only thing they can't do is to give you an epidural and perform surgery.

True, though I do feel like I get personal care from my OB - but the most important difference between the two is their training -
There is a midwife at the practice that I go to and I like her in terms of check ups and such; I just dont want her to be the one to deliver DC

My sister is a Labor-Delivery nurse here on Long Island. She has stated that her patients who use midwives have much easier and less complicated births, with full access to all the medical interventions most of us want: epidurals, specialists, etc. A hospital delivery ensures that women have access to all that would want for themselves and their newborns.
The midwives are, on the whole, so much more respectful of the women's wishes; episiotomies, tearing, and C-section rates are all markedly lower.
Don't confuse a midwife with a doula - this is a common misconception. Doulas are awesome, however, but not have to have the extensive medical training midwives do (many doulas are at least RN's, however).

this is just not true! i hate reading this on these boards! it's such misinformation.
if that is the way your OB is, you need a new OB!! end of story.
mine absolutely gave me "personal service". he even called me from california when he was there for a wedding to see how i was! now THAT'S personal service.
i pushed for 5 HOURS. with no c-section in sight. he told me if i WANTED one, he'd do it. but he knew i didn't want it because we had had many, many conversations over the course of my pregnancy. and when it came for drugs, i asked for them--he never once told me i should get it.
my OB returned my phone calls within minutes, took as much time as i needed in appointments and let the whole family come to watch sonograms. he NEVER EVER EVER did what was convenient for him. it was ALL ABOUT ME!!
i wish people would stop spreading misinformation. if you (an in general you) want a midwife, go for it. but i'm darn happy with my OB. and if i had tried to use a midwife (which i had no intention to) i would have needed an OB at the end anyway because DS couldn't come out on his own. there's nothing "natural" that could have gotten him out.
someone should make a movie about a kind, gentle OB. maybe then people would realize they can get "personal service" with them as well.

I am all for midwives......but it's just not for me. The only way I felt 100% secure was in a hospital and with my dr.
It didn't stop me from havng a natural, drug free birth all 3 times though. My dr. and the nurses were well aware of my wishes and went with my flow.

I'm not sure that I really have a choice---
In the practice I go to there are two midwives and several doctors...the first two visits were with the midwives and then the rest will be with a doctor if I choose or a midwife if I choose-depending on the appt time.
Day of delivery it is whoever is on schedule. That is why they rotate all of the doctors so we get to know everyone.
It is an all female practice- I have one doctor who I would go to for check ups- but I think over the years I basically know everyone.
I would imagine this system is not for everyone, but I am fortunate because I really do like everyone (minus 1)

MY SIL used a midwife for my first nephew, but ended up using a doctor also b/c of complications. For her second birth, she only used a doctor. I won't be using a midwife.
