Anyone taken the NYS LMSW exam recently?

I have been putting off taking it for so long because I don't need it for my job, but I am realizing that the longer I wait, the longer I will continue to put it off and it's good to have to expand my job options.

Just wanted to know what kinds of questions they focus on. Do you think it's worth signing up for a study group? (I've been out of grad school for 5 years already, I can't believe it!).

Also I would be interested in maybe setting up a FREE study group if anyone else is interested in signing up for the exam at the same time. We could support each other!!

I live in Western Suffolk and am thinking of Sundays because then I could get DH to watch my son.

Re: Anyone taken the NYS LMSW exam recently?

Hi

I already took it in 2007 so I am no help for a study group. I definitely would recommend you attend one though being out of school for so long. and pay for one of those online practice tests websites - contact NASW or your college for advice on a recommended website to sign up for.

I remember there being a mix of questions with no particular focus topic. For me, it was not about knowing the right answers than it was about knowing how to pick the right answer out of 3 other kinda-right answers. The questions are tricky-more than one right answer depending on how you look at it.

I studied 2 hours on week nights and 6 hours saturdays and sundays for about 4 months straight by taking practice tests repeatedly and looking up things I got wrong as I went along.

you'll feel so free once you pass!! TAKE IT!!!

Good Luck!!

I took the LMSW in 2005, but I just took the LCSW last week.

I probably studied 5-6 hours total for each exam. I did not do any study groups or classes. (I suppose I have a strong clinical background which helps of course). For both exams I ordered and studied from the ASWB study guides (it explains the actual exam, and has 50 practice questions). Be sure to read the questions very carefully as a large majority of them use the phrases What should you do FIRST, and what would be the BEST option, etc... most of the answers are applicable, but you can narrow down to two of them fairly easily. Remember the exam is 170 questions, 20 are pre-test, 150 are actually scored. The questions focus on various parts of social work, and honestly, no person will be well trained in all areas, so there will be some questions you will not know the answers to, no matter how much you study.

Good luck!
