 | Would you considering this Cheating during a NYS Exam? I was proctoring a 5th grade Math Exam Today in my school and a student passed a note to another student, to give to another....
 The Note Read...

"Do you want to go back out?"
 "Yes or No?"

I caught it when it got to the student it was intended for....the classroom teacher forced the students to tell who it came from, and screamed at them and said you can be given a zero for this, its a State TEST!!!!!

but to my knowledge she didnt report it and neither did i...

So would that be considered cheating?

I know if it had some math work on it I definitely would have reported it, but it wasnt Math related....what do you think?

I work in a district that has gotten in big trouble in the past for cheating, so I would not want to keep anything like that quiet. We are told not to walk around ourselves with pen or paper. If a monitor was walking by the room and saw that, it could be big trouble, even if it was just a silly thing. |

 me too...

these kids are TEN! some schools need to chill OUT with these tests. clearly these kids were feeling pressure and stress from someone to feel like this test was the be all, end all.

if they're acting like this when they're ten, what will they do when it's actually a test that matters for them like the SAT or GRE?

absolutely agree. your certification is on the line when it comes to questionable issues--better safe than sorry

Who would know except for you if you were the only teacher in the room?

Sometimes I think I'm too relaxed for this line of work - things like that just dont worry me.

you have no idea if someone walked by, or if a student goes home and tells their parent what happened, and the parent calls.

I would definitely report it and let the school decide what to do with the info.

 | Re: Would you considering this Cheating during a NYS Exam? its interesting on the difference of opinions you guys have...
turns out the classroom teacher told the principal anyways, and my principal said had it been "cheating" which it wasnt it woulda been grounds for the whole classes test being invalidated

mind you my principal tries to avoid any negative attention to the school, since it already gets a lot.

Good to know, but that student needs to learn even if they werent cheating, that they cant do that , especially on a State Exam like the Regents. Better to learn now....

That's why I would have reported it- obviously it was not cheating, but in my school, we always have monitors from the state, they are always suspicious, and I must leave both classroom doors open. I can't tell you how many times I'd turn my head to see someone outside my door watching us. Total fishbowl.

that makes no difference--it's my responsibility as a licensed teacher to take testing seriously. it's my responsibility to report anything i ever feel is wrong and let the higher ups decide if something needs to be done

i will NEVER put my career on the line over something like this.

i am heavily involved in the union and have a pretty good sense of what is considered to be my responsibility in my district. it's amazing how many innocent seeming things can snowball into something huge
