Re: Anyone afraid of getting old?
becoming unhealthy at any age scares me.
being a burden on my family scares me.
but aging does not necessarily scare me.
dying does.
but all of these things can happen at any time, any age....so one fear is not inextricably linked to a particular notch on the time line of life for me.

I am not afraid of getting old. I am more afraid of something happening to DH and me losing him
In the words of Winnie the Pooh:
“If you live to be 100, I hope I live to be 100 minus 1 day, so I never have to live without you.”
yessssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss
and now I going to cry.....

Re: Anyone afraid of getting old?
A little, I guess.
It's more the thought of my son having to take care of me if it came to that. To burden with my care if it came to that makes me sad

My grandma, who is the most fit and active woman I know, recovering from cancer, is far from a little old granny. She is sophisticated and beautiful at age 85.
*However* the thought of getting old scares me a little. I know its the unknown, but the idea of becoming frail, weak, and losing my friends and loved ones is such a sad thought to me.
Maybe I'm overly emotional because grandma was sick with cancer.... Am I the only one who thinks of things like this?
I feel the same..especially watching both my active vibrant grandmas get ill. Mymoms mom is homebound with emphsyema, and my dads mom is in a home with alzheimers. it scares the crap out of me thinking about my parents getting older and losing them, and then eventually my own mortality.

Re: Anyone afraid of getting old?
I'm not afraid of getting older and the aches and pains and lack of physical mobility...I'm afraid of losing my mind.
The only thing that scares me about aging is alzheimer's. My grandmother had it and it is hereditary.

Re: Anyone afraid of getting old?
What scares me is thinking I will spend my last days alone and scared in a nursing home or somewhere like that...
I have however, vowed, not to get an "old lady" haircut or dress like a frump! I'm going to be age appropriate yet fierce!

Re: Anyone afraid of getting old?
Yes of course it is very scary. I look at my wedding pictures and it was only 4 years ago and I can tell that I aged (along with everyone else in my family and friends) I choose to deny the truth though.

Re: Anyone afraid of getting old?
Here's my take on it.......My grandparents lived to 88 and 95 and DH's grandmother is 91 - I WILL do my best to be like DH's grandmother. The woman is amazing - she lives for the day, she goes on Senior trips constantly, she is extremely active in her Senior Citizen Center and is very happy. I watched my grandparents be miserable and do nothing throughout their senior years but be miserable and have watched this woman in the last 10 years be happy and active and she is definitely a role model.
You don't have to focus on the negative of losing people or getting old...you can revel in the wonder of things you can do, places you can go because you now have the time and meeting new friends.....will you get sick? Yes, sometimes you do - but you just pick yourself up after and do the best you can, enjoying every moment of your life as best you can.

I am not afraid to get old. But I am in denial about one day dying. Forget the thought about anyone that I care about also dying...

this is how I feel- I lost my Mom to cancer at age 52
that freaking scares me- that's 20 years from now
getting cancer scares me more then getting old

Re: Anyone afraid of getting old?
I get sad at the thought of getting old and my loved ones dying and me being alone, or me dying and leaving them.
I know getting older in inevitable, but it's hard to accept. Though I'd rather have the chance to live & get old than die young & miss out on all the experiences down the road.
I'm not as afraid of dying as I used to be.

Re: Anyone afraid of getting old?
I'm not afraid of being old, I'm afraid of being old and sick. I'm more afraid of suffering than dying. I fear that my smoking for years has done irreversible damage and even if I stop now, I will still pay for it later.
I would love to be one of those active old ladies!

Re: Anyone afraid of getting old?
YES I am! For many reasons.
One reason is if I am getting old my mom is getting old and other members of my family and that makes me upset
Also, I watched how my Grandma went from a self sufficient woman to someone who needed to be in a nursing home and needed constant care. It was upsetting to see how your body can really fail you.

Re: Anyone afraid of getting old?
A more pressing fear of mine (as a PP stated) is being without DH. I just don't know how I'd do it.
However, my grandmother who is relatively healthy is approaching her 83rd birthday.
And I feel so sad for her. Not only did her husband die 16 years ago (seems like a lifetime to me) but most of her friends are gone too. He children are all grown with grown children. She has 4 great grandchildren which I know makes her smile. But I feel like, what does she really have to live for? No one to take care of, no work to tend to, no house to "look after", almost no friends to hang out with.
Seems so lonely.

I always say that - especially because we have had some tragic losses in our family - 3 members died at young ages....
