Maybe try different positions at home to find something that works. I am a big fan of laid back position. Baby is resting belly to belly with you so their weight is on your body and you just have to give them a little head support. No need for special pillows or anything and it's comfy whether you're laying back in bed or sitting up just about anywhere.

This was me at the beginning but u'll def get used to it. What works for me is I cross my leg over the other so one foot is over my knee or closer to me (whatever feels more comfortable), kinda like men sit sometimes, and then I put my lo across from me, his head is on my right knee if he's gonna eat from my right breast or head on my left knee if he's gonna eat from my left breast, if I have a blanket with me I also use it as a pillow for him so he can be a little higher but it's not always needed.

I always just held them across my chest/belly like I did at home. I used my boppy at home but I just dealt with not having it when out. I also would have a lightweight blanket for privacy. I got leered at a couple times by gross men and I don't want to feel like I'm putting on a show for some pervert.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Yes, I definitely use a cover but was just having trouble supporting him to get a good feed.

Bring a blanket or small pillow to help prop them up. I remember it being so annoying in the beginning - it gets easier once they have a little bit of head control around 3 months.

I always found the nursing cover to be a huge PITA. I started using a light scarf instead and it made nursing in public a lot easier.

In the beginning I would actually bring my boppy with me everywhere. I would put it in the storage basket underneath my stroller when I was out and about. I liked the bebe au lait nursing cover. It has a rounded top that comes out so you can actually see the baby and it's not flat against their face. It definitely does gets easier!

Re: any tips for breastfeeding when out?

it wasn't until i had a home visit from a lactation consultant who showed me the proper positioning for the cradle hold that i was able to comfortably and successfully nurse without a pillow or an armchair. It was such an ah-ha moment that I could be sitting in a chair in a restaurant and nurse holding the baby with one hand and eat with the other. Maybe google videos of proper cradle hold positioning for a visual and then my IBCLC told me the answer should be "yes" to these questions if proper position is achieved:

Is my hand on his mid back?
Is there space in the crook of my arm?
Is there space at my wrist?
Is his head reclined on the middle of my forearm?
Is my elbow at my waist?
Is his chin pressed into my breast and his nose away from my breast?
Do all my fingers point toward his bum?
Are his hips below my other breast?

agreed! i hated the boppy and did this without even knowing it. so much more natural and comfortable for me.

yes! so natural. It sadly took me 3 months to get to this point without figuring it out on my own but when she showed me and it worked and i was sitting in a kitchen chair nursing, i literally cried tears of joy.

I'm not a breastfeeding mom but I babywear and a lot of mom's in my babywearing groups breastfed while wearing. It keeps the baby supported and you covered.

Re: any tips for breastfeeding when out?

I spend most of my day outside of my home, so I nurse a ton in public. I would say about 85% of the time, I nurse my daughter while wearing her in my ergo. The position is perfect, and it mostly covers me. I have literally nursed her while pushing a shopping cart, going on a walk, at Holden's museum while playing with my other child etc. I like that I don't have to take a time out to nurse.

This was me with my first - I carried the mybrestfriend pillow wherever I went, kind of hilarious when I look back on it. With my twins I got much better at just holding them wore a nursing tank and a shirt over it so I didn't bother with a cover. I just held the baby in the crook of my arm and latched them you will get the hang of it. Just do whatever you need to do when you are out.

Thanks everyone! I don't know why I didn't think of practicing at home- great idea. I have a baby carrier but haven't tried it out- another great idea. Thanks. I'm getting frustrated with breastfeeding but trying to stick with it lol

I still haven't mastered that lol. I really don't think I can do it with my Tula, but I also have an Ergo. How do u make it work? Any videos u recommend to watch to see how it's done?

With the ergo I just loosen the strap a lot on the side she's feeding on so she's low enough. I don't find it incredibly comfortable but if we're somewhere like the zoo and I really don't want to stop moving it's a nice option.

Re: any tips for breastfeeding when out?

I just loosen the strap on top .. I have never have had to adjust the hip. I never really watched videos, but at first I would nurse her in the ergo with a nursing cover on, then once I felt comfortable, took it off and have never put it on again.

As baby gets older it will get easier.. At least that's what I found. Once he was able to latch on easier and support himself more, it helped to nurse more comfortably while not on a comfy chair or couch.
