Any ladies take the subway into Manhattan everyday?

I take the 7 train 1 stop to and from work everyday. It's about 5-8 minute ride. I'm 7 months now and obviously preggo. I have been offerred a seat exactly once! By a nice young irish guy- accent and all! Most people see my belly, and then avoid eye contact. I did not accept the seat offered to me, since I'm on the train for 5 minutes, but I just can't beleive how many ppl I see notice my belly and then purposely turn their heads or avert their eyes!

Not to mention the people who push, have to get in front of me or try to squish me in.

I know that I will now take notice of all PG, elderly, disabled ppl on the train and offer a seat to them if I have one. I will definitely be more aware of my surroundings from now on!

Anyone have the same issues?

I don't take the subway to work, but live in Manhattan and take the subway regularly. I am 38.5 weeks and I think exactly 3 people have offered me seats Chat Icon I swear it feels like people purposefully look away from me - it's like they pretend they don't see me!!

yes i experience that on the train every day people are just very rude but f we pass out and hold up the train then they would wish they gave up their seat even if we wanted or didn't want the seat

Re: Any ladies take the subway into Manhattan everyday?

OMG, don't even get me started!

With my 1st PG, I was so disgusted with humanity.

I remember being clearly 8-9 months preggo and noone ever gave me a seat. And my train ride is a good 45 minutes.

I even had one WOMAN standing on the platform waiting for the train, ELBOW me when the train came so she could get in first and run to get to the seat BEFORE me.Chat Icon

I have to say, of the handful of times someone offered me a seat, it was almost always men! Not women!!

I will not take the train this time. I shell out the extra cash for the express bus so I am guaranteed a seat.

I don't take the subway, but commute on the LIRR and walk to my office ( I like to walk and God knows I need the exercise). I get so annoyed on a daily basis at how rude people can be. I am 7 months and obviously preggo, but it it like people pretend to not notice. I get pushed aside to go up stairs and it isn't lke anyone steps aside to let me get on the escaltor! This is why I am pusing it out as long as I canand working from home towards the end. People really get me Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I've been wanting to post about this!! I'm about 6 months and my belly is definitely noticeably pregnant!! I live in Queens and commute on the subway everyday. Today was the 1st time someone offered me their seat (it was a woman). Everyone always either closes their eyes or looks the other way. I was very surprised at this...I never thought I'd be preganant standing on the subway while all the "gentlemen" sit and relax. Crazy!

Re: Any ladies take the subway into Manhattan everyday?

At least I'm not the only one...I thought maybe I was just feeling entitled! Seriously tho, ppl are so rude. How would they feel if it was them or their mom or sister, daughter, etc.

In the morning sometimes, I am so dizzy and nauseous, I would LOVE to sit down for those 5 minutes. Sometimes I purposely rub my belly and breathe deeply and I know ppl see me, but they pretend not to! GRRRR

Re: Any ladies take the subway into Manhattan everyday?

My favorite is when everyone pushes to get on and I stand back so as not to get tackled and then I am the ONLY ONE standing in the entire car!

And obviously, everyone sees me. I am obviously pregnant. I just want to yell at everyone in the train car!

Re: Any ladies take the subway into Manhattan everyday?

Please, I have given up on the kindness of strangers. With my last pg I was living in Brooklyn and took the F train in every day, it was a nightmare. Now I live on LI and take the LIRR and the A,C,E. I don't even bother with the A train-too crowded. But even though I have given up on people being nice I still get disgusted. Just this morning-a woman-prob. my age, pushes past me to sit down. So I am standing in front of her and her bag tips over and hits my foot, still makes no offer to give me her seat. So I decide to stare at her the rest of the train ride and get this-the lady next to her was giving me a dirty look!

I am 8 months pg and there is NO mistaking my belly. I thought things would be better on the LIRR. Last week an old man on the platform in my town pushes me to get on the train. I was pizzed so I called him out on it. I said - It's not bad enough that you are a MAN pushing a WOMAN, but you are pushing an 8 month Pregnant woman-you should be very proud of yourself!

People don't care.

When I was working and pregnant with my son, the only time I was ever offered a seat it was from a woman. No man ever offered me a seat. I don't understand it AT ALL. If my husband saw a pregnant woman he would offer his seat in a second. It's gross how inconsiderate people are.

Re: Any ladies take the subway into Manhattan everyday?

I take 3 trains to work every day. The N train is the fricken WORST.

Yesterday I stood in front of a stupid teenager and her MOTHER. Coat open (because it's too hot with it closed), belly exposed, right in their faces. It got to the point where I was about to say "if you're not going to offer me a seat stop looking at my belly!!"

I'm only 4.5 months and I know I'm going to get a lot more hostile as time progresses. Chat Icon

I commuted during my last pregnancy and in 9 months I think I was offered a seat 2x. I stood for many hour long LIRR rides. Chat Icon

Re: Any ladies take the subway into Manhattan everyday?

It's NY- all for yourself.

I take the E train from LIRR and it's about a 20 min subway ride. Normally I can get a seat on my own, but there are numerous times I'm standing and no one offers- I've been offered once by a woman and it was because I was standing and a seat opened open right in front of me and this girl who was standing next to me jumps in the seat. I roll my eyes at her. Than the woman next to her must have seen it go down and offered me her seat but as she gets up she says 'it's hard to tell'- and the girl who jumped in the other seat says 'yeah it is hard to tell- i couldn't tell until I sat down'. Oh so you never thought to give me the seat after you sat in it and realized? ridic!

Mostly I don't let it bother me because w/ my big puff jacket- it is pretty hard to tell I'm prego. But just starting this week it's becoming more noticeable so I would expect more from people- but not in NY!

oh, and BTW- you can ask people to get up if they are sitting in the disabled seat- that includes us!

Re: Any ladies take the subway into Manhattan everyday?

I take the subway everyday from Penn st. to Wall St.

I have had a seat offered to me twice and only recently. The two people were older men like in their 50's. I usually end up standing and people do look at the belly then pretend to sleep or read or just don't make eye contact. They are totally push but I still push back. i also put my hand on my belly to protect it when it gets very crowded. lately if it's too crowded I just wait for the next train. This morning I took the elevator up to the platform and and everyone was trying to squish in and I put my hand on my belly and was like "be careful...7 month preggo belly here" and people stopped pushing.

I find I have to be vocal about my pregnancy or really like protective. I'm overweight to begin with so I guess they just assume I'm fat but I think I look visibly preggo now.

On the LIRR my qualm is when people see I'm visibly pregnant and squeze next to me. I know I don't deserve two seats...but I'm just afraid they'll elbow the belly. i was a big girlk to begin with and now I'm a big girls with a preggo belly. I just get nervous I guess. Also I've been on many a crowded LIRR train becasue I've gotten there within a min. of rthe train leaving and nobody offers a seat either...they do the same as the subway people. That's when i try to squeeze myself where I can becasue standing to Ronkonkoma is impossible at this stage.

Re: Any ladies take the subway into Manhattan everyday?

I live in Manhattan and ride the subway pretty regularly (although considering that I am now 8+ mos preggers, I prefer the bus). I actually always get offered a seat, but sometimes it takes awhile. I think it has to do with the winter coats. I normally notice someone looking at me for awhile before offering... like they are trying to figure out whether I am pregnant or not. I guess I have been lucky!!

Re: Any ladies take the subway into Manhattan everyday?

Thankfully I don't have to ride the subway but before I was pregnant I would take the train into the city once a week or so for work.
Usually I'd be coming home on a rush hour train that was packed to the point of standing room only.
Many times I'd have to stand for almost an hour until some seat freed up.
I remember complaining to my husband about having to stand and he always said- You mean no guy offered you there seat?

I was like honey- no guy would even offer their seat to a 9 month pregnant woman or an old lady- much less able bodied me.
They would knock a woman down to get a seat.

He was incrediulous.

People are truly disgusting.

I live in the city, 2 pregnancies, been offered a seat maybe 3 times total. To be perfectly honest, it doesn't even faze me at this point.
My favorite experience was, when I was pregnant with my son, I was on a train w/ 2 other pg women, all of us standing. They get off the train and this one woman says to her friend (both sitting), wearing designer shoes " That would never be me, riding the subway that pregnant, standing". I *never* say anything to anyone, but I turned around and said, "actually, Karma is a b!tch, and it WILL be you, because just watch, you'll be 7 months pregnant, and for some reason you'll have no choice but to work and everyone on every train you get on will get up for you as quickly as you got up for any of the 3 of us. All the Christian Louboutin shoes in the world cant make class out of trash". Don't mess w/ 8months worth of preggo hormones.

I don't get people anymore. Isn't it just common sense to give up your seat for someone else who could use it more. Chat Icon I have always offered my seat to anyone elderly, pregnant, disabled, or a mom with young kids. People need to learn some manners.

Same here.

What gets me more is the people who have to elbow and push a preggo-you should never touch anyone. When people do it to me, I elbow them back that much harder!

I always gave up my seat. I was on crutches and gave up my seat to a preggo!

I ALWAYS Push, shoved, elbwed, kicked back a LOT harder than anyone did to me. That's just RUDE IMO. DH knows this about me and begs me to be careful now that I'm pg. I have curbed my attitude, I have to always remind myself, I need to keep Chat Icon safe, it's not just about me anymore!

Isn't it sad that you HAVE to basically push, elbow people in order to protect yourself while preggo? Chat Icon
People are disgusting!
My commute home from work was the worst, people would run to get in front of me so that they could get in the train & grab a seat before I did.

This is so me. I don't ride the subway but I am one of those people in general that just can't keep their mouth shut when someone does or says something stupid to me. It IS so diff now. I used to think oh what r they gonna do to me but now it's like well they could punch me in the stomach or something and god knows what would happen... It has been hard curbing my tongue!

Same here but since this is #2 going into the city I knew what it would be like.

So far only a handful of men have offered their seats and one woman...she actually helped me to sit (held my arm) because the train was moving and I declined the offer.

A few weeks ago a woman ran into me and spun me around...I grabbed her arm and she was about to swat me away (I needed to catch my balance) and I screamed right at her that she help steady me for her rudeness or come with me to the hospital when I fall and explain it to my husband. Needless to say she apologized up and down and suddenly became concerned for me. Chat Icon

It is what it is...I try to avoid as much as possible.
