Another dining room area question... now onto that cut out!
The builder of our house apparently loved cut outs  b/c we have several, but this one we are just stuck on what to do.
Add a picture, mirror, shelving, other decor?
Cut it out completely so it looks through to the hallway?
Put doors on it and make it a display area?
We've lived here over 2 years and it's still bare.
I have to take better pics but here are some so you get the idea...
Pic from when we first moved in. DR on right... see that other cut out in the hallway? We have a big mirror there.
A good pic of what it looks like now, except we have dark bamboo shades on the window.
Another angle, showing the shades...
Need ideas!!!

Hmmm...those are very interesting! In the DR, is it deep enough to put on doors and display china/decorative plates? That might look nice. Otherwise, I would likely put a large mirror, painting, or photo collage in that area.
Or--if in the right location,might be a great place for a flat-screen TV!!

I think the cutouts are a FL thing because I see them everywhere! That and ledges and cubbies...
Since it's in the dining area some kind of shelving for dish dispaly comes to mind but I'm not sure how deep the cutout is so that might not work in your space. but I do love simple dish displays 
Or I say cut it out. I have a cut out in my kitchen looking out into my foyer and I think it's cute, it adds some character to the house as well as light.
I'll keep thinking for ideas...

It is deep enough to display dishes and things, but they'd have to be standing up. It's not deep enough for a plates to be stacked. I think putting on a door would be a lot of work, but DH likes this idea.

I would either cut it out all the way so you can see through to the other side
or I would get shelves for display
I don't like the idea of a picture in it. Its almost too expected.

I knew it! I love your office I wish mine was open, ours is a bedroom that we use as a den/office but I love when then the den space is open like that!

I have an idea...
I remember you saying you might build built-ins...so if you did that in your living area you could do the same with the cutout. You could add trim molding on the outside to frame it and then put shelves on the inside. Then paint it all white. If you used the same moldings as your built-ins everything would match and look like it was part of the house.
Then you can display dishes - or anything really.
Here is a picture I found - obviously your molding would not be this style but would be something that matches what you already have and would be white.

I'd go with shelves. You already have a cut out with a flat object (mirror) so I wouldn't do that or a picture, and you have a pass through into the office, so, I'd do shelves for something different, and b/c it is a dining room.
ETA- I'd probably also paint the inside a different color.

Yes we WANT to do built ins... but time and money are preventing us from doing that. But, I think the cut out would look awesome with moulding around it!!! Ohhh DH is going to hate me.

You can do several things.. I have several of those too in my TX house.
You can paint the inside of the cutout a different color.. something in contrast to the room..
you can find a nice wrought iron piece to hang in the cut out..

I like that idea too, painting a different color in there... maybe a lighter version of the color that's there now or darker? Or white? I'm leaning towards the shelving idea.

I think it would be fabulous with shutter like doors. like spanish hacienda style. dark wook like the shades/table.
with a little latch.
and pretty pretty plates standing up.

But you can even find another piece too.. There is so much that you can do with that cutout.
if the cutout were deeper, I'd do shelves (to give it a built in look), but it doesn't look deep enough to put shelves up..
You can hang a piece of artwork in there.. even hang a sconce and some greenery..

I love the plate shelves in that cut out area and painting it another color. I think painting it white with white shelves and then colorful plates to display. There are so many things you could do with that area Jess. GL making a decision.

Jess, I just got the new catalog for Home Decorators. This shelves might just be the kind of thing you are looking for, for that size nook.
Here is there white one
Here is there dark one. you can see the grove for a dish in this pic.
They range from $24-$49, 12" long - 60" long. Depths, 5.25" - 6.00". I would think your depth is about 8 inches maybe, so they might work nice. Not to expensive either. They have serveral different colors too.
