Re: another breastfeeding question

I'm not planning to. I think it will be too much of a committment, especially because I plan to go back to work full-time within 3 months of giving birth. I just don't want to deal with "pumping" and everything else that's involved. I think this is definitely a personal choice though for everyone.

Re: another breastfeeding question

i plan on it. i already bought a medela pump - if breastfeeding works for me, i'll start pumping so DH and my family can feed Chat Icon and i'll pump when i go back to work at 12 weeks PP.

honestly, aside from the nutritional/health benefits of breastmilk, a huge motivating factor for me is the cost of formula. if i had to give my baby formula i would have no problem with hat, but if i can save $$ by BFing and pumping then i am going to do that for as long as possible. formula is just SO expensive.

Re: another breastfeeding question

yes, I will give it a try...

I was a formula baby (thanks to the early 1970's thought that man-made is always better Chat Icon ) and had an autoimmune disease, and several allergies.

becuase of this, I want to do my best to breast feed (to stimulate scone's immune system) and will continue to avoid all anti-bacterial cleaners.... becuase a completely sterile home causes a lack of normal immune stimulation, and frequently leads to allergies and other immune problems...

I also intend to have a delayed / spread-out vaccination schedule, so Scone's system is not overstimulated with 9 vaccinations at once Chat Icon

Re: another breastfeeding question

I'm going to try to pump...I def am NOT going to have Chat Icon on my boob though...I've never been comfortable with that idea in general.

I will try to pump until I go back to work at least...we will see how it goes.

I plan to try my hardest. But if it's really not working out I'm not opposed to formula.

Re: another breastfeeding question

I did with DD#1 (for 11 months!) and absolutely plan to with #2. I also went back to work part-time and was still able to stick with it.

I plan on BF'ing. Hopefully it will go well. I'm not returning to work at all so that will make it a little easier down the road.

Honestly, and don't get me wrong b/c I'm all for BF if you're up for it, but I think this is a misconception (that it's cheaper). I think the only way it works out to be cheaper is if you BF for a LONG time or if you end up having to use an expensive formula.
If you look at the costs involved in BF/pumping
The pump (say $250)
Nursing clothes (I probably have 5-7 tanks and/or bras from Target so say $150-$200) Not to mention the pumping friendly office clothes I had to get
Storage bags $10 for box of 50 (now that i'm back to work I use about 5/day so that's $30/month)
Pads for leaking (about $10 for a box of 60 which last me a month)
Prenatals

Bottles, to me are a wash either way since if you're pumping you need them too.

Again, don't get me wrong, I completely encourage anyone who is comfortable with it to try to nurse but IMO it's a misconception that it saves much $$.

If you don't need a "special" formula, I believe someone told me a can of powder lasts a wk and is about $30 - that's $120-$150/month.

I find it to be cheap for me b/c I have 2 borrowed pumps (one for work/one for home) so I saved that $$

I did some math and according to my calculations (just estimates of course) it's cheaper to BF if you do it for 6 months if you bought your own pump - if you are lucky to get a loaner it's of course cheaper from the get-go and if you don't have to go back to work since you shouldn't need to pump quite as much, or may chose not to at all

Re: another breastfeeding question

I am going to try to... we shall see. I plan to take some time off after I give birth so I don't have to deal with pumping at work-- which, I have no clue how I would do that.

By law I think most places of business are required to provide a lactation room-- but I think most do not.

I nursed my son for 9 months (I went back to work after 4 so I nursed/pumped/supplemented after that for 5 months). I hope to do it for a year this time but we shall see Chat Icon

that wouldn't be allowed in most LI districts as the kids have access to the rooms during prep and lunch (if it starts raining, etc.) check with your union rep to see if she can confer with the principal to find an empty room somewhere THAT HAS A LOCK!!! (VERY important!!) i had to do this for a teacher in my school and we came up with a solution...but the lock is a must!!

i had EVERY intention to BF for a few months and then pump when i got back to work. BF lasted 4 days for me. it was too painful (even with the lactation consultant's help) and it just wasn't for me.

i pumped for 2.5 weeks. that also wasn't for me. i just stopped a few days ago and while i am sad that i had to stop, i am so much happier now.

although i got a pump for free, it was $$$ buying the supplies for it! oh well...at least i tried Chat Icon

Re: another breastfeeding question

i understand; I am a NYC Assistant Principal and she said she was a NYC teacher

In my school and other schools i have worked in, if a child needed to get into the room and it was locked; someone would call the room first to see if the teacher was in there

our kids do not have access to the room during a prep and the teacher locks the door

just wanted the other teachers to know there are other options since the room is not an option in most places Chat Icon

Re: another breastfeeding question

I absolutly plan on doing it for at least 6 months... and maybe beyond that. I BF DS for only 2.5 months and I felt like such a failure. I went back to work (for just 2 weeks) and while pumping my supply didnt keep up and he went through a growth spurt at the same time. We sort of lost it from there. But this time around Im a SAHM so it should be a bit easier. I still have my pump in style and I also bought a hand pump this time around for the time I want to pump. Im going to try my hardest this time but Im also not opposed to formula either. The cost is not an issue since Im so broke we recieve WIC benefits.
