I have a diamond, but at first I didn't want one. I couldn't decide what else to get though, and diamonds go with everyhting, so I went with it.
I went with DH & we jsut picked a ring that I liked, and it was below our budget--I have no idea what the cut, clarity, etc of the stone is.

I got Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Honestly - I had a abd back and was driving an old LeBaron convertible. DH asked me if I wanted a new (second-hand) vehicle or a diamond.
I went practical.
He did get me a diamond later.

OK, not an entire house, but we put all our money together and put it on a down payment 11 years ago, instead of a shiny pebble on her finger. She doesn't really like rings, and would stress too much about losing it, so she's much happier with the house. 
This is what my husband and I did. We already had 2 kids and I didn't want or need his commitment to be sitting on my finger. So we took our money and invested it in a house.

While I've gotten one idiotic question (Could you not afford a diamond?), mostly I get compliments on my ring.
It's my birthstone and a natural choice for a green freak like me.

I have a diamond- its fairly small and not great quality. I would rather have had a sapphire or emerald. BUT I still love it b/c DH picked it out and surprised me, I had no idea he was going to propose and he had no $$$..lol.

i have diamonds but not a solitaire, i have a 3 stone ring. DH liked the "past, present, future" aspect of it since we have ALOT of past (being together 11 years) and it represents our present and future together. i thought the sentiment was very sweet and i love my ring!
people have actually said "why isnt the center stone bigger. he did it wrong." which offends me to no end because its MY ring and its what DH chose for ME, not you.

I have a diamond, but its an heirloom ring that came from DH's grandmother. And its still in the original setting (which I am not crazy about, but don't want to mess with it).

Honestly, I love engagement rings with stones other than diamonds!!! It really doesn't matter what kind of stone you have, it's the meaning and love behind it!
