Another - Stranger Diamond Spinoff.....
How many don't have diamond engagement rings?
I have a sapphire - I asked for one because I'm against what the diamond dealers do in regards to Africa, blood diamonds and hoarding diamonds to make the value go up. Did you know that if DeBeers released all the diamonds in their inventory they would have almost no value whatsoever?
Plus, the first rings of engagement were any kind of stone that the fiance would pick for his girlfriend....the jewelers and diamond companys "created" the diamond engagement ring in the 1940's.
Anyway, I was just curious if anyone else didn't have a diamond engagement ring or if I am the only freak!

DW doesn't. I bought her a house instead...
OK, not an entire house, but we put all our money together and put it on a down payment 11 years ago, instead of a shiny pebble on her finger. She doesn't really like rings, and would stress too much about losing it, so she's much happier with the house.

I have a diamond but I have a "conflict-free" diamond. DH did extensive research and my diamond is actually from Canada, not Africa.

I have a diamond. It's my birthstone and I've always loved diamonds. I think other stones are also really, really beautiful.
My ex bf was getting engaged to his babymama (they never did get married..), and his family owns a jewelry store, so he was having a ring made that included his birthstone and her birthstone. I thought that was really really sweet and meaningful.

I always wanted a sapphire but I was working in NYC at the time and was told by the other girls at work that was "weird and cheap" and I caved in and told DH I wanted a diamond.
I've had it for over 6 years now. I stopped wearing it the day after our wedding. I never loved my e-ring, I have been thinking about selling it and getting something else for the past 2 years. It's just not me.

Definitely! GEt what you love!
I love my ring. but sometimes I wish I ahd looked around a little more to find an antique setting which is what I always pictured, but then in the store I really did fall in love with this setting...but I was also just really excited and I'm impatient so I was like "that one!"

Why don't you change the center stone and put in a Sapphire? You could always make something else with the diamond.

While I've gotten one idiotic question (Could you not afford a diamond?), mostly I get compliments on my ring.
It's my birthstone and a natural choice for a green freak like me.

Re: Another - Stranger Diamond Spinoff.....
My DH bought me a 3-stone ring (sapphire flanked by diamonds) a couple of years before we were engaged and I was shocked at how many people would ask me if it was an enagement ring.
I'd consider a precious stone as an engagement ring, but I'd want a honker of a center stone...like 10+ cts or so.
The only downside to stones other than diamonds is that some of them can be pretty fragile and I wouldn't want to wear it everyday during daily activities, like I do with my diamonds.

Actually - I think Sapphires are as strong, if not stronger than diamonds. And Emeralds are also about as strong as diamonds. I have worn my sapphire every day for 5 years and never a scratch.
I think the only stones to be wary of are things like opals, turqoise, etc....they are soft and also change size with the weather so they can fall out of their setting.

Tricia, I love your ring. and Q you know I love yours too.
I had the most perfectly me, perfectly beautiful sapphire E-ring.
it has since been recently replaced by a new ring, still blue, but a topaz this time...b/c we are house/apt hunting and I foresee and jacuzzi tub in my new bathroom when I look into the stone of my new ring

sapphires are only i point below diamonds on the hardness scale...they are a 9 while diamonds are a 10.
I researched this extensively before deciding b/c I am a true worker bee, very hard on my hands day in and day out.
I originally wanted an aquamarine, but at a 7 on the hardness scale, that would have been too soft.

Sapphires aren't stronger than diamonds. They're a 9 on the Mohs' hardness scale with a diamond being a 10. And although a sapphire is 2nd on the scale, it's not proportional, so a sapphire isn't close to the same hardness.
The only reason why I stated the difference between a diamond and precious stones is that I found out the "hard" way. (Pun intended. ) I need to have my sapphire polished because of the abuse it has taken from my everyday wear over the years. My diamond doesn't have a scratch or dent on it.

Let's say there are 5 people in the room. I'm the tallest at 6'1" and you're the 2nd tallest at 5'5". Would you consider yourself tall because you're the 2nd tallest?

Re: Another - Stranger Diamond Spinoff.....
I have a 3 stone ring. It is a total of 2.5 carats, all the same size and its over 100 years old. When my husband asked me to marry him, he had a good friend who was a jeweler, and he put away a stone for him, but told him to let me pick the setting. It was 2 carats and exactly what I didn't want. The first thing I asked him was "did you pay him?" Luckily, he hadn't and his friend referred him to an estate dealer and I got exactly what I wanted. We did send his friend a case of wine for his trouble.
Fourteen years later I love my ring, and am constantly asked about it. When ever I bring it in to get cleaned or recently to have the shank checked, the jeweler asks me if I want to sell it. The funny think is, it was less expensive than what my husband would have bought on his own (but it was never about money) and I truly love it.

what I am saying is that though the stone isn't has hard as a diamond, it was sufficiently hard enough for me to feel comfortable getting it.
yes, my sapphire has suffered a few surface scratches that were polished off, but I was not concerned about any cracks or chipping because is IS a strong stone.
since I didn't really want a diamond, my concern wasn't to compare the two, but to make sure the stone I got would stand up to me.
and no, I wouldn't consider myself tall, but I'd still consider myself HOTT
