I would probably be peeved too, but at least he's actually a doctor, so I feel like it's out of respect. My DS is in 2nd grade and the teacher has asked to be called Dr. So and so and I feel that's super pretentious and we all roll our eyes at it. I've had grad professors correct me from calling them Doctor, but this second grade teacher wants to be called that. I apologize for venting on your post Chat Icon

We have doctor teachers at our school too. Always makes me roll my eyes that they want a first grader to say "doctor"Chat Icon

Why though? I'm just curious. Is it different than the school psychologist being called Dr. Soandso? Even the Kndg students in my school call our school psychologist Dr. HerLastName b/c that's her name and that's what we refer to her as.

So I was actually just on the phone with a doctor colleague and asked if she corrects people if they call her Ms. instead of Dr.

She said "Oh God, no. I don't tell anyone I'm a doctor. Then they ask me to look at the growth on their foot and sh!t. Only a moron or a pretentious fluck would do that."

I can totally picture Vanessa (from Odd Mom Out) saying something like that! Lol!!

Ehhh, I get it. I don't think he was being rude per se, but depending on his tone I can see why it might be obnoxious. You are both equals in this scenario (if anything, YOU have the upper hand) so pushing the title really isn't necessary. He's not at work. Also, way to pass along work ethic, your kid is a little plagiarizer.

Bingo. I totally agree. It sounds like he said it condescendingly (and come on, some people love to throw their titles just to make it seem like they are better than others).

Unless you heard him on the phone, why would you assume he was being condescending? I'm sure he didn't give a passing thought to what he said when he answered the phone, he's probably on auto pilot when he says, "Dr. Smith".

The crap people get worked up over amazes me. Who cares how he referred to himself, seriously.............WHO CARES!! People are so hypersensitive these days. If someone WHO IS A DOCTOR refers to himself as a doctor and that bothers you, then that's your own insecurities coming through and has NOTHING to do with the person on the other end of the phone.

Exactly.

Yes, I think the OP is wrong to be peeved. Whether he has an MD or PhD, that is his social title. I don't go out of my way to correct people out of nowhere, but if I am given an option and asked, I will identify myself as Dr. (last name). And if someone is annoyed by this or feels put down, I agree it is your own insecurity. Who cares what he wants to be called? He earned the title.

I don't think it's insecurity. I could be called Dr. (not an MD) but I would never and I still think his correction was pretentious. Not him identifying as a doctor but going out of his way to correct her.

Am I wrong to be peeved?

I think it's fine. He is Dr. Smith (or whatever his last name actually is). Mr. is not his title. Would you call him Miss Smith? That's not good title either. He earned that title. I also think that it was probably said out of habit. He is Dr. Smith all day every day. He probably didn't think twice about it.

Is it different than the school psychologist being called Dr. Soandso? Even the Kndg students in my school call our school psychologist Dr. HerLastName b/c that's her name and that's what we refer to her as.

Slight spinoff, I'm a teacher and whenever the school psychologist emails me, he adresses me by my first name, but signs it Dr. Soandso. It's not an auto signature, he types it every time. THAT irks me, bc I feel if he's going to sign it formally, he should be adressing *me* by my title (Ms.). When I see him in the hallway, we are on a first name basis, we're the same age, so it's not like he's from the old school.

I guess it would be a teaching moment then, because there are doctors that don't give shots Chat Icon

We have many "Dr.'s" in our school. ALL the kids call the Superintendent "Dr.", he is a rockstar around here, and they obviously know he doesn't give shots. Our psychologists are Dr's, and my son who HATES shots and has special needs has never in his entire school career equated the people working in the schools to doctors that give shots.

This made me Chat Icon because DD's pediatrician does not give shots. The nurse does it. At our first appointment where she got one, he explained that he never does it because he didn't want kids to associate him with shots. Pretty clever if you ask me. I would have an even worse time getting DD to the doctor!

I think it's just as obnoxious when someone refers to their spouse as "my husband" or "my wife" when you're clearly on first name basis (family, friends etc)

People love titles. There's a time and place for it all.

I have a friend who still refers to her friends as "my maid of honor from my wedding" and "my bridesmaid." It's been almost 20 years and I remember all the girls & have seen them since, so she doesn't have to do that. It's like they have no other role except their role from her wedding.

As for the original question. it all depends on tone. I would not expect a doctor to refer to him or herself as Mr. or Mrs. I guess they could probably just say, "this is FIRST NAME THEN LAST NAME. "

I agree - I kind of see that as the equivalent of putting MD on your license plate. No one needs to know you're an MD. Maybe you want people to know your an MD if you pull over at the scene of an accident but I highly doubt that's why people do it. Same with putting DDS on your license plate. I highly doubt there is a dental emergency you are on your way to. The point is, no one cares! The teacher of your student does not care that you are an MD so why even bring it up. It's not like you are going to have this ongoing long lasting relationship. You will probably speak 4 or 5 times over the course of the school year.

I've seen psychiatrist plates, too! I was driving with my bff a few weeks ago and she was like "um, who needs a psychiatrist on the LIE."

I said "I do. And you're obviously not familiar with driving on LI."

I remember reading when I was looking up wedding etiquette that medical doctors are always Dr. &
People with a phd are Dr. in professional contexts only.

He wasn't wrong, but he also could have said, this is John Smith, or he could have been more annoying & said, "actually, I'm a physician. It's *Doctor* Smith".

This is how I feel as well… although I know it is hard to convey the tone in which it was said. If you were corrected in a rude fashion, then it would bother me. But, I would just let it go and roll my eyes.
