I could quote a lot of people but I'll just say generally that the situation has changed and it makes sense for masks to be optional in most situations now.

April 2020 was not the same as April 2022. Mandates made sense then. Two years ago this was more deadly and we had no vaccine. N95s - which do more to protect the wearer than other kinds - are more available and cheaper now. It's a different world and of course people should adjust.

We flew last week and we didn't wear masks although I had a bunch with me just in case we were in a situation where I thought we should wear them. I did however wear one on the LIRR this afternoon because people were packed in tight and I have literally zero faith in their circulation systems. It wasn't a big deal to me. I put it on and didn't give it another thought until I took it off.

We are vaxxed and boosted. DH is even eligible for his second booster. We'll mask up if we need to but those occasions are much less common. I am grateful for the scientific advancements that made this possible and we probably wouldn't even be talking about this on the board anymore if it weren't for one person.

But here's the thing. A lot of people do still want to and are still talking about it. This post is about how the mask mandate was just lifted on planes. That is something completely new. And it was of particular interest to me (and many others) because I travel a lot and I have family that works in the airline industry. If you don't care to talk about it anymore then just don't follow the post and even better, don't post on it. Why begrudge someone the right to post about something that they might find interesting?

The constant back and forth about it is silly and I think most people feel the same. I also travel regularly. The death of the mandate is really not that interesting. Most people understood that none of this was going to be forever. We are moving on.

And I'll take a preemptive strike because I am sure someone will say "well it was interesting enough to you to post" but posting about it once or twice is different from the incessant back and forth from WW. It's silly and I think you are smart enough to realize that even though you are ignoring the context here of who keeps perpetuating the conversation. WW is obsessed with who wears masks and who doesn't and it's quite bizarre.

So don't answer. No one is forcing you to answer on any thread.

I think it is exciting that we are moving forwards for many things with this pandemic. Funny how I have posted on other online pages when mandates are lifted, like masks on the cruises, especially for the kids and everyone thanks me and are so excited.
I guess you don't care because you are one that can't think for themselves and realize how stupid all of this is. Sounds like you don't like independent thinkers who question things and just don't follow the crowd.

One thing I’ve noticed, at least in this forum…people that were so adamant about masks and so against not wearing them are now in favor of being optional. Good for them for finally seeing the importance of choosing what’s best for u, hurray! I wish they saw the importance of personal choice before when many people that had problems with masks were harassed for their choices.

I feel like there are two types of people. Those who can realize that things may have changed and are flexible with their views, and those that double down even in the face of information that might prove them wrong or show that things are different now.

But it's more than that. I am happy we don't have to wear masks everywhere anymore, and I think a lot of the rules now are dumb- but I also understand that some people still want to wear them and that's okay too. I think there are some people here who only want to hear that no one will ever have to wear a mask again and if anyone does, they will question it and make that person feel bad. We have the freedom to decide in so many places and I"m sure we'll have that everywhere soon enough. So, I will make my choise and you (the general you) can make yours and just not judge eachother- wouldn't that be a wonderful thing?

This exactly. People have been arguing for Choice for 2 years now. We have that choice so let people do as they wish. I could care less if someone wants to wear a mask or doesn't. I do what is best for me and my family. I do not have to understand other's choices but I do have to respect them.

I agree as well.

It boggles my mind that people care so much about WHY other people do what they do.

TBH I don’t care what anyone does. But it does bother me when there is page after page on here about how you will get sick on a plane because of the air quality when that is simply not true. Maybe in 1985, but not now. And these are the same people spewing that we need to rely on science over and over and over but they don’t take their own advice. People are so strong in their convictions and they can just not admit that they might be wrong.

I must have missed the page after page of discussion.

I stand by my statement that I have better things to do than worry about WHY someone is still wearing a mask on a plane.

And planes aren't magical germ-free zones. If you're sitting next to/across from/in front of someone who is sick you do have a higher chance of catching what they have. There absolutely is research on this (and it's not from the 80's). So if I see someone wearing a mask on a plane, I have zero opinion on their reasons. As long as they don't care why I'm NOT wearing a mask.

See I disagree, I think it's quite the contrary. I think that the people that complain about WW the most are the exact same people who continue to engage. So while I think that WW is genuinely interested in continuing the conversation, I think there are a subset of posters who just simply enjoy arguing with her. There is really no other explanation for it. They are grown women. If she really bothers them they could just ignore her. But they don't.

Just went back and counted 9 posts that claim they fear getting sick on a plane. And I was only up to page 4. Of course if you are sitting directly near someone you have more of a chance of getting sick, as I stated earlier. But to think that a plane is less safe than say a theater or a restaurant or any other public place you are completely wrong. Never did anyone state that a plane is completely germ free. No place is.

OMG enough with this fear bs! It’s not about being fearful!!! There are people who DONT want to get sick and take precautions. They now have an EXTRA precaution. A mask. It’s not about fear. Being sick sucks . Having a Sick kid sucks.

I’m not afraid of getting Covid. I just don’t need the inconvenience of it. I’m not losing sleep over the fear of it. I’m not obsessing over the news. I’m not isolating myself and putting myself in a bubble. Nor is anyone I know!

Think about Someone who takes self defense classes. Not everyone who takes them is afraid. Or who buys a car with extra safety options. Or brings a sweater. It’s not about fear. Because they still GO somewhere. They do those things as a precaution. Their mentality is that it doesn’t hurt. Not out of fear. If they were afraid, they’d stay home.

People are doing A LOT of what they used to do. Some with masks, some without.

Do you think someone who carries sanitizer does so because of fear?

If you look at the posters themselves I don't think that's the case at all. Most of the people who tended to lock horns with her are actually not around much anymore at all. The whole thing grew tiresome. But then occasionally - as in my case - people hop back on and get sucked in.

I've had a general rule for about a year that I don't read her posts after we had this absurd back and forth where she kept insisting the way I experienced something was not what happened even though she wasn't there. It was a silly meaningless thing about a mask sign - I no longer remember details - but I decided that was enough. Her endless insistence on what I saw made it clear she wasn't able to have a normal conversation. And before that she didn't really bother me as much as she bothered others. But I've read maybe 8-10 of her posts since then and I highly recommend refraining because it's not a good use of time.

Yes, hand sanitizer could be a fear thing too. Is everyone fearful? No. Are some OCD, yes. I don't believe in hand sanitizer honestly and never have. The only time I have used it is when I HAVE to. I would never do it on my own.

Actually I think what you are describing is the exact definition of fear. If you wear a mask it's because you fear getting sick. If you bring a sweater it's because you fear getting cold. Safety features in a car - it's because you fear getting in an accident. Much of our lives are based on fear. Much of this fear is warranted but when it crosses into a line that we are hindering our lives that's when it becomes a problem. Think about the example of a child with a hot stove. There needs to be fear because there is danger. Not perceived danger but actual danger. I think that what WW is trying to convey is that the perceived danger of covid is still way out of line for many people compared to the actual danger that covid really poses. I am not saying I agree or disagree. Just trying to explain what I think she is trying to get across.

Do you think maybe there is another word that fits better as to why someone brings a sweater so they don’t get cold?? I think fear is a bit of a stretch. I PREFER not to feel cold, I don’t fear it. Like I’d RATHER NOT get sick, I don’t fear it. I think you’re being very black and white. There are a range of emotions, not every action is in response to fear.

I think some will and do need help after all of this and the questioning of mask wearing might help their overall health as to many it is not just that they are trying to be cautious. It has turned into something more mentally and it is just not good.

I was speaking to a coworker who said that he JUST was able to see family and it was all because of his wife and she basically has lost her mind over all of this and it has affected her so badly.

There are definitely cases like this - jeez, we were told at the beginning if we don't mask we likely would kill someone. That will have an impact.

I have coworkers who haven't left their houses as well and some who refuse to go back to work (some legit scared, others who I just don't think want to).

Yes. The message was so fear inducing. People took it to heart. There were even people that felt entitled to demand others to wear masks. I remember there were even fights because someone wouldn't wear a mask. It was insane.

Bingo! THAT is the type of behavior I would like to learn about. Chat Icon

That is my opinion based on how I see certain people still behaving. For example, to attend my outdoor college reunion in June you not only need to be vaccinated, you need to be BOOSTED. Clearly there is still fear there or they wouldn't go to such extremes to require a vaccine that has very little efficacy in actually spreading covid.

Or ones from this board who were ratting out coworkers who in turn got fired from that job. All because they weren’t wearing a mask as they were in fear.

Agree and I wasn’t referring to everyone who still wants to wear a mask. I do think it is a fear for them to require you to be boosted though. I still see it on fb people going back and forth attacking non vaccinated people saying they are the problem Covid is still here. There are many in fear and if some actually paid attention they would see it too.
