Thought I’d update on the plane situation. On Yesterdays flight, probably 90% of people wore a mask.

Really? That is actually sad that people are not moving on or they just don’t know because they don’t listen to the news. How about the terminal and the employees?

I don’t believe continuing to wear masks on a plane indicates that people are not moving on. They are traveling. Doing normal things. Would you say the same about people who wash their hands? They’re both mitigation strategies.

Maybe people still masking are visiting someone who is immunocompromised. Maybe they are immunocompromised. Maybe they have a cold and are trying to help others not get sick. Maybe they live with someone who is high risk. Maybe they have no sick time and need to avoid getting sick on their vacation. There are a million reasons why someone might wear a mask on a plane. It has no affect on you, so why do you care?

Many people at my job were wearing masks the week before spring break because they wanted to try to reduce their chances of getting sick before going away on vacation. I didn’t think they were living in fear; I just thought that they wanted to enjoy their vacations.

They are fearing getting sick. Sigh….

I don’t “fear” getting Covid, but I certainly will do what I can to avoid getting the flu, a cold, or any virus before going on a vacation. In the past masking wasn’t really a socially accepted way to do that, now it is. It’s great to have choices!

You were worried about getting sick before a vacation, correct? Fearful of being sick yourself on your time off.

This is not a mask mandate/covid related fear. This is common sense - yes, I'm concerned that I might get sick before a trip. Just like I was long before covid. I just understand why you are harping on this "Fear".

It’s because this board has become dominated by right wingers who believe that masks do nothing and that all our government wants to do is control us. The truth of the matter is that masks hurt no one. Unmasking on public transport will make it harder for vulnerable people and their caregivers to move about safely. It will increase spread to vulnerable locations.

Not a right winger, never said masks don’t work. They have proved though anything less than N95’s really don’t work as well. Unmasking will not make it any less safe. Funny how many of us, unvaccinated have never gotten Covid. Many of us exposed also. Almost all my vaccinated family and friends have gotten Covid, except in my house.

Am I the only one excited

I wouldn’t call it a fear based in perceived danger. More like potential inconvenience. Like bringing along a sweater in case it gets chilly… Does that mean I fear getting cold??? No, I just don’t want to be inconvenienced by being cold and uncomfortable.

My kids get sick every time we fly. A cold, stomach bug, you name it. Then we have to scramble for childcare so we don’t have to take off another few days of school/work because of their illness. Honestly it never even dawned on me to have them wear a mask, so I will probably give it a shot next time we fly and if they don’t get sick I will continue to do it.

So maybe it is a fear…a fear of getting fired for taking additional days off after my vacation.

I like the sweater analogy.
Very good point.

Re: Am I the only one excited

There are way too many posting on this topic and I get everyone gets their pov. I will say we literally just got home from a weeks vacation in Mexico. We had to test negative to come home. That alone is worth keeping a mask on. Lol
I will say we all kept our mask on. It was maybe split on the plane. My son gets sick after every vacation. We all wore masks. Are we in fear?? No! We left our home to travel. We just don’t want to get sick coming home. We already took a week off. My son would get sick after thr first day on vacation which wasn’t fun for me.
No one came home sick and for the 3 hour long plane ride we were fine.
Doctors wear masks during surgery. Are they living in fear? No. It’s about choice. You don’t know someone else’s story. Are they a cancer survivor? Are they living with an I’ll family member? Not our choice to judge. There was no judgment on the plane so what’s the big deal if someone chooses to keep wearing one.

Most people get sick when their immune system is low. Not because of an airplane ride. When going away, your routine is usually disrupted and different and your immune system can lower and you get sick.

Do you know why doctors have always worn masks? Smh

I don’t care if you want to wear a mask but I don’t think many are educated enough to know why they are. I just watched a coworker take their daily walk outside with a mask on. Not a single soul around them. They also still wipe down their groceries. They are vaccinated and might even have a booster. Do you think that is fear?

Honestly I try not to judge others. I don’t go outside with a mask on but he can. Maybe before Covid they had anxiety issues. Maybe they are self conscious and use the mask to hide their face. Who knows.
Yes, I do know why doctors wear mask. My brother is in surgery many times. My point is even if our immune system is lower and my son wearing a kn95 mask that keeps him healthy for coming home I’ll do it.
You know why most kids during pandemic had a lot of fear wearing masks and freaking out? Bc alot (not saying all) see their parents yelling and screaming about wearing it. We didn’t. Now the mask mandates are being lifted which is great. But for me on a plane we wore it. We also respected the rules at the airport and wore them. When we got outside we didn’t. I don’t wear them in stores, my kids stopped wearing them in school.
When it feels necessary we will. Visiting a friend who has cancer we wear a mask with them inside. The week Before my son’s bar mitzvah we will wear masks.

To be exposed you need to be near someone who is ill for at least 15 minutes long, less than 6 feet apart? Do you feel the places you wear a mask you are that exposed?

I said the only place we wore a mask was on thr plane which was very close to others and for well over 3 hours so May have been. I never said we wear it outside and also said we stopped wearing in school and stores too.

To me the whole thing is silly. The air filters on planes are so incredibly good that you are probably only going to get sick if someone sitting directly next to you is sick. And typically when traveling with family you sit together. I think that the perception that planes make you sick is a common misconception for people that do not travel often, because we had it so ingrained in our heads from 25 years ago that people get sick on planes. You are much more likely to get sick going to a crowded restaurant that does not have good ventilation. I flew home yesterday on a 5 hour flight and I would say less than 10% of the passengers had masks on. None of the crew did. If you feel more comfortable wearing a mask, certainly you should do so and I wouldn't think anything of seeing someone in a mask, but this fear is based on very little science.

You know where you are most likely to get sick? In those outdoor tents where people who were too scared to eat indoors used to eat. Totally enclosed in plastic with no filtration systems like inside the actual restaurant.
I used to laugh at those people who thought that was so much safer than indoor dining.

Yup but they thought they were better off being “outside”. We actually ate in one of those igloos with friends and they both came up positive 2 days after we sat with them for hours, one vaccinated, one not, both got pretty sick, same though, the unvaccinated not worse. Hubby and I got nothing at all. It was cold that night and we ate dinner very late. I also ate something before we left the house knowing that it would be hours after my normal dinner time. Wore warm clothes. I kept my immune system up. I truly think that is the #1 thing about not getting sick.

Didn’t you say you wore them in the terminals?

Yes. That’s what the rule was at the airport in Mexico. If masks are required I follow the rules.

So on the plane where optional and in the terminal where it was not, Dumb rule but most are now.

Actually not a dumb rule. On the plane, there is good air circulation. In the terminal, people are crowded together in line for security and at the gate. There is not good air circulation.

But it is optional in most airports now so we are picking and choosing which airport is safer than another one?

This! I never understand why people think that the reason they’re sick is exclusively because of the flight? I literally have never gotten sick when traveling, ever.
