Re: Am I out of line?
No you are not out of line. And you were honest about how you took the day as well, most people wouldn't be.
When my grandmother died, DH (who was my FH at the time) had no problem getting beverment days, but my cousin had to take vacation b/c they said she only got the days for "mother-father-child-husband-siblings"

That is ridiculous! Who responds with that? I'd be counting to 100 right now or else I'd probably explode.

NO! HE was out of line. How dare he mock your situation like that.
I would write back: "Hmm, I don't know. I'll forward your e-mail to the HR Director for her opinion."

Re: Am I out of line?
His response was completely obnoxious and I'm blanking for a word but not compassionate???
If my Auntie - who is my great Aunt, my grandmother's sister - and who I spent most of my childhood with learning to bake and be crafty died, I would be devastated (even though she's in her late 80's) and would be so offended by his remarks.

Re: Am I out of line?
Sarcasm is not good, especially for this situation.
He is wrong and he sounds a little harassing to me.
Edited: I thought he was the HR director, but it seems like he is your boss. Still the use of sarcasm in this situation is really bad.

Re: Am I out of line?
OH MY GOD, that is totally out of line, totally uncalled for, incomprehensibly insensitive, and beyond inappropriate.
I think you REALLY need to alert him to the fact that was just disgusting behavior.
ETA - seriously, I would email him back and say "while I don't believe you were intending to be hurtful with your sarcasm, please understand I had a very close relationship with my Great Aunt, and would appreciate that you respect that I am greiving for her death right now"

He emails back: "My brother-in-law's uncle's next door neighbor's cousin's step-son's college roomate passed away yesterday and I would like to go to the funeral. Do you think that is within the guidelines?"
I would have forwarded that to TPTB so fast....

Re: Am I out of line?
So who was this guy you emailed?? I would DEFINITELY report him to HR and his supervisor for his condescending remarks. How DARE he mock your grieving. And this wasn't some brother in laws sisters neighbor (or whatever he said), she was a relative!!!

What a jerk - he was totally out of line - you were being honest.
I would take Mcsullivans advice and send him that email.

that's harassment. Send the email to HR and file a complaint. How dare he belittle your situation. He knows not what he has done. Stupid!
