Allergy Test?
Can anyone give me insight on a first visit with an allergist for a toddler? DS is exhibiting signs of allergies and having no allergies myself I have no idea what to expect. I know about the prick tests/blood tests - but that's about all. Is the prick test painful? If so, how long do the side effects last? TIA!

Re: Allergy Test?
What do you think your toddler needs to be tested for?
DS has nut allergies. He was initially diagnosed through a blood test.
The allergist did a skin prick test, too. It's not painful at all. It's basically touching different allergens to your son's back. It gets very itchy, if he's allergic, but that's it. I think they leave it for about 10 minutes. Once it's done, the allergist puts a lotion on to reverse the effects and the itching is over. It's not bad at all.

Thanks for this! We believe he has a food allergy as well, but the reactions come up when eating very different things so I'm struggling to pinpoint what it is. He eats things like PB, eggs, cheese all the time with no problem so not a nut or dairy allergy. It's likely some ingredient inside something. My mother things maybe MSG since it happens when eating out at times - but I'm not so sure.

Allergy Test?
My son was 16 or 17 months old when he had a prick test for all the major food allergens (nuts, eggs, soy, dairy, etc). It was very difficult for him as he had to lie on his stomach for 20-30 mins after the pricks were administered. He was a screaming, crying mess. In the end, it turned out he was allergic to nothing...

Ugh, I heard this same scenario from someone else, too. I wonder why in some cases it's less invasive (or torturous!) than others. Perhaps having to do with age and ability to explain what's happening.

my daughter had the same issue, and we went to drs all over, and finally realized that since she has eczema her skin would reaction would be more due to her Ige levels. Nothing about allergies makes sense.. she was a mess and not to mention we didn't find out anything more that we didn't already know.

Allergy Test?
During your visit they will take a history and likely do some testing. The scratch tests are uncomfortable but do not really hurt. Dd's allergist does the tests on the inner forearm in infants and toddlers- he limits it to six tests and a positive and negative control. He sets her up in my lap so I can hold her arm still and puts in a DVD of a movie for her. She usually gets antsy the last couple of minutes.

Allergy Test?
I think it probably depends on your DC's temperament. I knew ahead of time that he would be a mess, but I really wanted to find a cause for his eczema (I think it's just seasonal now). My DS is really bad around strangers. Add in the needle factor and more or less being forced to lie in a specific position and it was a nightmare. They had a tv there, but only recently (21 months) has he shown any interest in it. If your DC has a more easy going temperament, you'll probably be fine.

DS definitely didn't have to lie on his stomach the whole time. He was sitting up and I brought my tablet to show him videos.
They do it on the back so the kids can't reach it to scratch.

In addition to the scratch test, your dr might also do a blood draw. It's pretty awful for my DS b/c he doesn't like needles, but I didn't want you to be surprised if it was brought up.
For my DS - when he had his first scratch test at 15 months, it was pretty difficult b/c he was itchy and we couldn't allow him to touch his back to anything (couldn't sit him in my lap with his back to my chest). Definitely bring stuff to keep him occupied - books, videos, etc b/c it seems like those 10-15 minutes go by slowly. :P
