All Votes Aren't Equal - What you can do...

It's a harsh lesson but something must be done about it.

Clinton somehow managed to win the popular vote (yes we do like her) but got killed by the electoral votes...

How is this possible and what does it say when you know, if you live in a blue state, your vote isn't worth as much as someone who lives in a swing state like OH, PA, FL or even Wyoming?

It boggles the mind, and something has to happen so this changes. It happened to Gore in 2000 and now has happened to Clinton.

We are not a true democracy as long as the electoral college exist or isn't changed. For example, "Wyoming has three electoral votes and only 532,668 citizens (as of 2008 estimates). As a result each of Wyoming's three electoral votes corresponds to 177,556 people. Understood in one way, these people have 3.18 times as much clout in the Electoral College as an average American, or 318%"...

Are we worth less than someone living in Wyoming? Heck no! Please let your voice be heard and act by writing to your legislator:

Make Hillary President - Petition the Electoral College

National Popular Vote - Write to your legislators

Moveon.org Petition - Sign the petition

But that one sentence is the whole thing...we are not a democracy, we are a republic. I think most people don't realize that.

There is a petition on moveon.org about the electoral college.

All Votes Isn't Equal - What you can do...

We are not a democracy, we are a republic. The founding fathers wanted the states to elect the President, not any one person (plural). That is why we get the amount of electoral votes we do. One for each senator and representative, which correlates with the amount of people who live in the state. To change that you'd have to change the constitution and the basic foundation of our country.

If you really want to get into semantics...

We are a representative democracy. However, that is not the point of this thread, the point is obvious...

yup, that if it had been opposite that he had won popular vote but lost the electoral that he would have been called a sore loser and that the electoral college is a long standing process that we must accept as our way of handing the spread of our population equally as it was intended.

Oh but he didn't lose and even tho he himself complained about the electoral college and folks thought he was a fool for doing so because at the time it was assumed it would favor her instead of him now its all about how its a messed up system.

I've lived in two large electoral states as a voter.. Texas and New York. Currently still living in the larger of the two and it is predominately red while my county/city and capital all voted blue. But that is now how the program works. So our 38 outweighs NY's 29 but California's Blue outweighs us and so on. Each state is given their allocated number of votes and based on the majority vote that candidate wins. which is why it comes down to only the battleground states essentially.

Its nearly the same in how She won the nomination over Bernie in SEVERAL states yet no one cared about it then. If he was given his due to each time he won by popular vote for the delegates based on the votes, would she still be the nominee? some he got no delegates, others only a small small portion and yet still gave her a run for her money, makes you wonder, yes?

Seems to me that if you want it to be a true popular vote and to dump the electoral college all together than you are going to have go back to the nomination level, allow early voting and expand voting for a lot longer so EVERYONE has a fair and even chance to vote. A knee jerk reaction at this point is honestly just pointless.

I think the primary system needs to be changed too. Why do the states with earlier primaries basically determine the candidates? If someone loses the first few they drop out.

I don't think they'll change the electoral college. In NY I think it hurts voter turnout because if you don't vote Democrat it doesn't matter.

It was designed that way so that the rural areas would have a voice and not be forgotten to the big cities. So that candidates couldn't just focus on a few big cities to win and leave the rest of rural America behind. At the time that seemed like a good plan when a large portion of the country was rural. But today, I am not sure if that still holds true.

ETA - I don't believe the system needs to be changed because in our 200+ year history this has only happened 5 times where a President was elected without the popular vote.

"Only" 5 times means 11% of the time a President was elected without a popular vote. I'm pretty sure any engineer, scientist, businessperson, etc. would want to fix a system that fails 11% of the time?

Actually I think its 8%. As an auditor, I can tell you this is an immaterial difference. There have been 57 elections in the US with 5 turning out this way.

The thing is though, it didn't fail. It did exactly what it was put in place for. The states are represented, not the individuals.

Unless what I know to be true is incorrect.

This. The Electoral College is set up to prevent big cities from getting all of the say in Gov't. The States elect the President, and each state is supposed to represent their constituents.

It's not going to go away. It would fundamentally change so many things.

It seems so unfair to many because it just happened. Things that happen *now* are always more "unfair" than things that happened in the past.

Plus, even though it's only been 8% overall, for many voters, it's been 2 out of 5 elections in their voting lifetime, so it *feels* like it happens often.

Seriously, if this were the other way around all of you would tell trump supporters to stop being sore losers.

It has been this way forever. Stop trying to change the rules on every single aspect of life because it doesn't go your way. You will not always win

And to add....if we had a popular vote would she have won? I know In New York a bunch of people who didn't vote bc she won ny so there is no point. If you took that into consideration for each state, those people who don't vote bc their state is heavily red or blue, would the results be different? Maybe people wouldn't vote third party....who would those votes go to?? Think about it before you DEMAND change.

And 2 of those times were in the last 5 elections. What is that- 40%? We're a different country than we were when the constitution was created which is why is was created to be a fluid document, changing with the times. Maybe now is that time.

It's not about being "sore losers", it's about changing the system moving forward. The electoral college needs to go IMO. Why bc you live in a "swing state" should your vote count more than mine in NY? It's unfair and the electoral college people are useless. Just like the DNC superdelegates. It just exists to maintain control of the people.

Donald trump didn't let it go in 2012 when he claimed the electoral college was a rigged system.

Exactly. If he lost, he would have been carrying on that the election was rigged. But now that he won, it's all good. Right.

When I see this response from people it screams to me that people want to avoid and deny the real issues that are going on. Denial. Sweep under rug.
