AFP restest came back NORMAL!!!
I just got the call. I am so relieved. My AFP retest came back normal (first was showed borderline elevated risk for Neural tube defects). This is such a huge relief for me. It certainly doesn't mean that all is ok, the level 2 (next week) should verify that all is normal. But it is definitely a good sign!

Can I ask, was this a special test you took for a reason, or was this part of standard testing? Just wondering if this is something I need to ask for and at what point in the pregnancy?

It's pretty standard, not age dependent. Most drs do it, it's called the AFP test (alpha fetoprotein) and it's done b/w weeks 16-18. My first test showed a borderline increased risk for neural tube defects (anencephaly and spina bifida). But this test has a lot of false + so my dr retested and it came back normal.
Ask your dr about it to be sure you aer getting it if you are interested. Some people do pass on it b/c of it's false positives.

I feel so much better, not out of the woods (although my drs says I am!) But it works better for me to be cautiously optimistic and just take it test by test!
