Advice for FTWM?

I'm going back to work January 9th and I'm getting a little nervous about "doing it all."

Does anyone have any advice/tips for a FTWM? Any easy to make healthy dinners (I don't get home until 6 most nights) or maybe some make ahead freezer meals?

Also, any tips for getting myself and DS ready in the morning? How much extra time should I add onto my morning routine?

I'm starting to feel overwhelmed already!

Re: Advice for FTWM?

What time do you have to leave? That will factor in. I had to be at work by 8:15, so in order to get DS to daycare on time I had to leave my house at 7am. I would get myself ready and warm up the car, then get him , give him a bottle while I changed his diaper, and get him dressed and into the car. Everything was prepared the night before so I had very little work to do in the morning.

Advice for FTWM?

I just really play a lot by ear. I do everything go daycare the night before.

Dinners are whatever. I don't get home til 630. So it's chicken, rice, pasta, chili. DH is easy cause he would be fine eating PB & J.

I clean as I go and then do major cleaning on sat am. It's easy while the baby is not mobile. It has gotten a bit harder now that DS is walking.

Honestly it's not that hard but you have to be ok with the house not being perfect. I'd rather spend time with my family than have a perfect house.

Re: Advice for FTWM?

usually on Sunday I make 2 big meals that will get us through the week. Now that the girls are eating regular food I also make sure to have ready to go meals in the freezer, if the 2 big meals are not suitable for them.

I'm not sure about how much time to add in the morning. I leave before they get up in the morning.

you can do this!!! It will take a little adjusting to, but in no time you will all fall into a new routine.

i'm also going back to work on the 9th and am dreading this. i don't yet have a plan but i'm sure we'll adjust to the new routines. My mom suggested to be ready an extra 1/2 hour earlier than i need to, just in case.

Re: Advice for FTWM?

I do a lot of make ahead meals...crockpot meals or just frozen prepped meals...pinterest has so many ideas for those, so I spend my Sundays prepping for the week ahead. I have a cleaning lady, which helps with with the stress of cleaning on top of everything else.

Re: Advice for FTWM?

I do meals on Sunday or prep them for the crock pot for the week. Meal planning takes time but it takes a lot of stress out during the week. I also make sure my bags and the kids bags are ready by the door so I am not looking for last minute items. Also the keys/ jackets are kept by the door. Finally, I lay out my clothes and the kids clothes so I don't have to think about it.

When DS was young, the first day I planned an extra half hour. DD is 2 and DS is almost 5 and now we all can be up and out of the house (with breakfast for the kids) in 1 hour. And the evening planning now is part of my routine so it's not more that 15-20 minutes.

I prep a lot at night. Lay clothes out for DS and me, lunches made, daycare bag packed. I plan dinner in advance so I'm not scrambling to get stuff done at night. The crockpot using Pinterest recipes have been the biggest help. Having a dinner/bath/bed routine helps too!

Good luck!

Definitely set up the night before & include an extra outfit for you just in case.

Best piece of advice is never pick up a well-fed baby facing you after you are fully dressed.Chat Icon

Or one with a snotty nose.

DH does a lot of the cooking and gets home earlier than me so that's helpful. If I am cooking though, I generally use the crockpot or something I can prep the night before and just toss into the oven when I get home (about 6:15).

I pack the daycare bags for the kids the night before. It gets easier once they are 1+ because you don't need as much stuff on a daily basis.

I lay out the kids clothes as well and think about what I'm going to wear (my options are limited since I still have some weight to lose so I can choose in the morning).

As for cleaning - we do dishes and such every night, straighten when we can (it gets harder as the kids get mobile since there is more to do). We have a cleaning lady come in every other week as well to do a deep clean.

Good luck, it's hardest in the beginning but, it gets easier with practice and a routine!

Re: Advice for FTWM?

I agree with the above and also, just like on Jersey Shore you need to wear "the shirt before the shirt" Chat Icon

I usually just have on a tank or something before I put on my actual shirt for the day ...lesson learned, no need to walk out of the house with formula, cereal, whatever else is on you...and then if you actually do notice it before you leave the house, no need to panic Chat Icon

But also be ok if you do leave the house a mess.....I walked out and realized when I was on the train that I had boogers in my hair. Wiped them off and moved on....Be flexible is my biggest advice.

Re: Advice for FTWM?

Be flexible, don't expect to do it all, and be okay with it. Let things go when you can.

(said by a FTWM who has not yet figured out how to manage it all and who is currently chilling on the chaise while the baby naps instead of trying to do any of it...because I need it!)

Omg totally good advice .I'm the last to get dressed.
Prepping the night before helps so much from your clothes to theirs and having a packing order to the car. I have 3 bags plus her and my coffee. I have to check out pintre st for dinner ideas that's wbere I need help too.

You can do it just give yourself extra time the first week and it falls into place. Good luck.

Re: Advice for FTWM?

Definitely pack diaper bags and get bottles/food ect.. set up the night before
Get your lunch/drink ready the night before
Set up coffee pot night before so you just have to hit a button
Pick out LO's outfit as well as your clothes the night before
As far as meals - on sunday I make food for the week for example
meatballs
pasta
mac and cheese
chicken nuggets
crock pot meals - such as stew, chili, soup ect...
lasagna
grilled chicken
cook a big batch of frozen veggies
All these things are good in the fridge in a tupper wear for a few nights (monday through wednesday)
We order pizza on thursdays
Fridays - I get home earlier
Sunday is laundry and cleaning for me

You can do it! It just takes a little planning ahead
