Adenoids and Tonsil Removal
If your child had the surgery what was the recovery time like?
Dd is almost 3 and her doctor said size wise her's are 4 out 4 and he wants us to try an anti inflammatory for 6 weeks but surgery looks inevitable.

Adenoids and Tonsil Removal
My son was only 2 when he had it done. The recovery was very tough. Because of his age, we had to stay overnight at the hospital. The first few days he ran a fever and was pretty lethargic, but by about day 2-3, was when the pain started. He would scream and it would just make it worse. He refused to take any of his medication but everything just hurt going down his throat. We would have to hold him down to take it. Once the medication would kick in, he would be better, so definitely try and force it the first few days. The only thing he would eat was italian ices. BUT, with all that being said, even though the recovery was difficult, it was the best decision for him. After he healed, he slept better, started speaking clearly, could hear a lot better, less cranky, and so rarely ever gets sick (this year he had his first ear infection in over 4 years). Please feel free to FM me if you have any other specific questions.

Adenoids and Tonsil Removal
I think it just really depends on the child. My son had to stay overnight, as he has a bleeding disorder so needed to be monitored. After release, the first 24 hours were good, but then the pain set in. My best advice is to keep on top of the pain meds. It took him about 3 weeks to fully recover.

Re: Adenoids and Tonsil Removal
ok so I read your post wrong. My ds didn't have his tonsil out. They are BIG but he has never had a throat infection so ENT thought we should leave them in. He had tubes put in and adnoids removed.
Recovery was a breeze! He really had no issues except after 2 days when he started to eat regular food he didn't like the way it felt when he swallowed. I presume he still had some swelling
He came out of anesthesia a little combative. Literally punching the nurses but once he slept in the car on way home he woke up like a new man.
He even said everything sounded louder right away (he had a mild hearing loss)

Re: Adenoids and Tonsil Removal
My two older sons had theirs done at 2 yrs old. They both had some trouble with it. The first couple of days were fine, but when it started to crust over is when the pain started. Def get Tylenol suppositories, in case your child won't take it orally. Mine both did, but I had them just in case. Recovery took about 2 weeks. Also, make sure to not give them anything red. They both had to be monitored over night bc of their age, and bc they had sleep apnea.
My youngest had his tonsils and adenoids shaved when he was 1 1/2. He had to stay over bc his pulse ox dropped, but they think it was a fluke. He was eating pizza, crust and all, that night in the hospital. There were no limitations and his recovery was a breeze. There is a possibility of them growing back.

Adenoids and Tonsil Removal
My DS had both out when he was 2.5. Recovery lasted just over a week and it was pretty bad. We definitely alternated Tylenol and iboprophen as soon as it could be given for 4 days. DS has a nut allergy so we didn't give him ice cream, but he ate lots of applesauce, smoothies, and yogurt. A friend's kid had it and he ate a lot of scrambled eggs.

Re: Adenoids and Tonsil Removal
My son had the surgery xmas eve. He is 3.5. They told me to expect hard recovery especially from the tonsils. Watching him get the anesthesi was hardest part. He came out of surgery groggy and sleepy. He had a full appetite within two days but I had to make sure to give him soft foods. We did Tylenol only for 2 days! He's usually such a difficult child but somehow did very well. He vomited once after surgery and wept at night for a few days but was up playing with his siblings quickly and recovered well. Good luck!!

Re: Adenoids and Tonsil Removal
Every kid is different. I have heard of easy recovery. However my kid not have one. His tonsils were HUGE. So that might have made it worse.
It was 10 full days. 10 days of the pain not getting better at all. Codiene for 10 days. Screaming in pain. Not eating anything except for ice pops and one bowl of ramen noodles a day. Awful.
And he has still had strep twice this year. He got them out in August. So I feel like it wasn't even worth it.

Re: Adenoids and Tonsil Removal
my son was older. He was 5.
He threw up blood when he woke up from his surgery. only a little bit.
Otherwise it was a piece of cake. he slept a lot the first day. Layed on the couch, had Gatorade, ice pops, etc. Woke up him during the night to give meds and make him drink water. Doctor said it was important to wake up him up every 4 hours at night to drink or he'd wake up miserable and sore. But we also were on top of him during the day to drink a lot, even if only a few sips every 5-10 minutes. The doctor said the more they drink, the better they'd be.
He had the surgery on a Friday, he was eating normal on sunday and went to school on Monday (no gym class though for a week).

Re: Adenoids and Tonsil Removal
DS2 was 2.5 when he had his tonsils and adenoids removed. He stayed overnight at the hospital because of his age. The recovery room was tough, but the rest of the night went pretty well. He ate and drank like a champ. Then, the pain started setting in during the middle of the night. He barely ate or drank anything for days and getting medicine in his was extremely difficult. It took 3 or 4 days before he willingly took a popsicle. He was doing much better within a week and was fully back to himself by day 10. As tough as it was, his sleep and health have been so much better. Before, most colds turned into ear infections. Since he had the surgery a year ago, he has fewer colds and no ear infections.
