Adding me to DH's insurance if I get fired

I know it has to be birth, death, or a life changing event, which I believe being fired falls under, but will it be a problem that I'm pregnant and that being a " pre existing condition"

TIA!!!!!

have DH check with his HR department RIGHT NOW.

For my company - this time (until November 7th) is open enrollment!!! It may be the EXACT right time for you to be asking about this!!!

I believe in New York State it wont matter as far as a pre existing condition is concerned...

DM24Angel would probably know she worked in the field...

okay - so i BELIEVE (and i'm not in HR or anything) that as long as you have continuous coverage - then nothing can be considered a 'pre-existing condition'.

It MIGHT be nessary to consider COBRA for a short while...

but someone else also pointed out that for NYS it may not be considered that...

Losing your job (and therefore your insurance) is a qualifying experience - so you "should" be able to add at any time - but your DH should check with his company right away.

In NY pre-existing conditions are covered as long as you don't have a lapse I think greater than 60 days in coverage. So depending on when you lose your benefits and he can add you - you might want to add cobra just to make sure you are continuously covered so you don't have a problem.

When I left my job after having DD, DH was able to add me b.c it was considered a qualifying experience (I was no longer working and didn't have insurance). I'm not sure though if the qualifying aspects change per policy though - but usually they are death, birth, marriage, loss of job etc.

I was told you will not be considered a pre-existing condition if you are PG.

I had the same issue when I was PG with DS.

If you lose your job and goes with DH's insurance you will be covered.

Is there an open enrollment soon? Usually a lot of places have them at the end of the year.

I was on my old job's insurance, then DH started on the FDNY, so we added me to his insurance too, so I had both, but everything went under my own insurance first. I was fired from my job 2 days before DS was born (on April 24) and my job told my health insurance company (Oxford) and they refused to pay. So, good thing I was on DH's or we would have to have footed a $13k billChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

you will be covered. Dh's company will usually just need a HR contact at your company where they can verify your last day of employment... If you do get fired/laid off it is customary for them to advise you of the contact info then.

in our case it was not a pre-existing condition...and it does qualify as a life event so we had no problem adding the coverage to the new plan. We lost benefits three weeks before i was due (but I knew it was going to happen so I was able to ask the questions ahead of time so as not to freak out about it). I think you're covered but def. check with HR.

Yes, exactly.

As long as you don't have a lapse in coverage, nothing can be deemed a prexisting condition. So if you get fired, you should make sure you are still on your insurance (whether that be they give you a mth or so of coverage once being fired or you pay for COBRA as soon as yours is up) and immediately file to get on your DHs with your "qualifying" event of being fired.

I was fired in Dec and we spoke to my dh's hr dept right away. I got covered no problem it was seemless. I then got another job and became covered under my new insurance which again was seamless. You shouldn't worry just be sure to have your dh speak to his HR dept right away.

I thought that only if you have a lapse in insurance can they have a grace period for pre-existing conditions. If you loose one insurance and pick up another with no lapse then you are ok.

How long is a lapse considerd? Let's say I get fired on a Monday and DH notifies HR Tuesday, we file the paperwork and everything is done that week, is that a lapse, or do I need to call COBRA the second I get fired??? I just don't want any time to lapse. I know his HR did say that losing my job would be a life changing event, so I know it would work, I just wonder how quickly I would get added, so there is no time between getting added and getting fired....

yikes--- I am not sure, since I think it really depends on your husband's company policy... but I can't believe you think you are going to get fired!! Chat Icon

Sounds like you really do work for some gems!

At least you'll be able to collect unemployment when you become a SAHM!! And, the money you collect will probably help with COBRA if you need to pay that for a few months until your DH has open enrollment.

Re: Adding me to DH's insurance if I get fired

You should be totally fine. A couple of years ago my dh left his job without having a new one and I was able to begin covering him the next day with no problem- loss of job def counts as a qualifying event. Then when he got a new job I went on his - again, no problem.

GL and I hope everything is ok!Chat Icon

Yup, totally setting it up for me to get fired..BUT, honestly a friend of mine made the BEST point I've heard yet, since I was only getting disability for maternity leave, I'd rather be fired at this point, bc you get more $$$ with unemployment than you do with disability and for a longer period of time@!@@@Chat Icon
