Well, then, step away from the dachshund! Seriously, I'd say that bigger dogs are often easier than these crazy little guys!!!!

Re: ? about dogs
Hmm, I don't know if you can make a general statement like that. Some dogs like babies, some don't, regardless of breed.
Usually most dogs do well with babies if the baby already exists once the pup comes into the home.
Small dogs are often a slight risk with babies though, as they can get injured very easily. Plus puppies require almost as much attention as a baby, so having a baby and a pup can possibly be overwhelming (to you, to the pup, etc).
I don't know if anyone can recommend any specific breed that you could safely say would "love" a baby. I am curious what others reply with.

I agree, my dogs are terriers and they do not do well with children (but maybe b/c they have never lived with a child).

I have a pug. He was just as high maintenance as a baby probably is IMHO til about the age of 3.
He was a maniac as a pup and very, very active.

Re: ? about dogs
If you have a baby already, you might want to look into adopting a slightly older dog. Maybe just under a year...then you don't have to worry about training it so much and the shelters can tell you if the dog is good with children or not.
If you go Here there is a very easy quiz to help you select the type of breeds that would be good for you.
Good luck!!

Good luck!! ITA. Despite what the breed dictates, each individual dog is different. My Pug is great around DS, but he is already quite a bit older, at age 6. I would have never have been able to handle him at a puppy stage with a baby. My Chihuahua is DSs best friend, although the breed is notorious for not being good with children. When you get a shelter or adopted dog, you have the advantage of already knowing of the dog's characteristics. Places like the Little Shelter will evaluate the dog first to make sure that the home is a good fit for both the dog and the family.

ITA also. I just wanted to add that Kent Animal Shelter evaluates their dogs first also to be sure you are getting the best dog for your living situation.
Good luck!

Good luck! Thanks Jennie, I was having a brain fart & could not remember the name. I believe that Last Hope may also do evaluations, and any breed rescue or Puppy mill rescue will most certainly do an eval.

It's true, you cannot generalize about a breed. Also, I know I said dachshunds are not great but it just takes some extra work, that is all. However, they do get injured easily, so even when their disposition is okay, you have to be careful, especially with the mini ones. Mine is a very robust standard dachshund but I still watch out for his back. He is not terrible with kids but so many big dogs seem to be easier.
I have a book called Encyclopedia of Dog Breeds. Take a look at it in a bookstore. I love it!!!! Just remember not all dogs of a breed will be exactly the same.

I have a doxsie and my dog is not great with little babies, but all the ones that walk love him and they love him too. my doxsie loves to give kisses and calms down after a while.

Re: ? about dogs
My MIL's Dachshund is GREAT with Kids and Babies. So I guess you really cannot generalize.
I would probably get a slighty older dog. Puppies go through teething and although they do not intend to injure you, it hurts!

You should train my SIL's BT. She is SO bad. But I think it may be related to the fact that she is home alone all day with no other animals and they both work really late hours in the city.

Re: ? about dogs
I would stay away from very small breeds as they are very fragile and could get stepped on.

Re: ? about dogs
I have 2 cavapoos and they love children. That does not mean other cavapoos love kids. Mine were exposed to kids when they were puppies. They always liked kids. They love DS.
That being said, I suggest having a dog AFTER you have kids. That way, the dog does not feel like a child would be an "intruder" coming to interfere into their life.
