A WWYD ? Regarding Maternity Leave
DD is 8 weeks old. I am officially 8 weeks into my 12 week maternity leave and am supposed to go back on March 27, however DD was in the NICU for 6 weeks and only came home on February 8. I emailed my agency director today to request an extension of my leave due to her only coming home 2 weeks ago, and he responded that I can put in a request for an emergency personal leave for up to 30 days. I'm back and forth with the idea of going back on time or taking some extra time. It's unpaid, which I expected, so although that's a factor, it's not a deal breaker for me.
Would you go back as scheduled, take some extra time (maybe 2 weeks), or take the full 30 days?

If you can afford to take unpaid leave and you believe your job is secure I would definitely take the extra time.

A WWYD ? Regarding Maternity Leave
If you can get by with not getting paid and your employer has no problem with it, I'd either do the 2 weeks or 30 days.

This. For DS#1, I felt bad taking full advantage of my company's parental leave so I went back after 14 wks (two weeks before delivery, 12 weeks after). For #2, I was already a mom and knew work would be waiting for me when I returned so I took the full 20 weeks I was entitled to (6 weeks paid, 14 weeks unpaid).

I agree with everyone else...if you can afford it take the 30 days leave. Those extra 4 weeks of bonding will be priceless.

Ditto! DD came right home from the hospital and I still took an extra month of unpaid time with her (she was a colicky mess and I felt bad leaving her with my mom, but still....)

Re: A WWYD ? Regarding Maternity Leave
I would (and did) take the extra un-paid leave time (due to being on bed rest for almost 6 weeks before DD was born). Just a word of advice, if you carry the benefits, you may be responsible for paying the whole premium (what your company pays) after your FMLA expires.
