coming back from maternity leave....WWYD

Hey Ladies,

I need some advice. I am NYC teacher and am coming back from a 12 week maternity leave in a week and a half. (So sad). I emailed my principal about 2 weeks ago saying that I wanted to start planning lessons before I go back to school and if I could find out where my students are/ pacing calander. All she replied back was to check my emails to help me plan my lessons. The emails that are sent are about how to be a better teacher- not about specific subjects. I emailed my AP two days ago for an update and no response.

I also heard through the grape vine that my team teacher (i teach math and science and she teaches social studies and ela) had her position taken away and they add my group of kids to another team and the sub they have for me is now teaching science and social studies for 3 sets of classes instead of 2.

The principal nor any of the APs have informed me of any of this. I wanted to start preparing now so I am not overwhelemed when I go back. Am I to assume I still have the same position until they tell me? How do they expect me to be prepared? I don't even have the social studies text book at home to even begin to start plan lessons for it.

I know I should call the school tomorrow, but I would rather have everything in writing.

This is kind of ruining my last week with my baby.... I am stressing just thinking about it. :(

How would you ladies handle this

I would call and then follow up with an email perhaps restating everything they say in the discussion. I thunk everyone from adminnto teachers are so overwhelmed. Good luck and just try to enjoy your baby. Chat Icon

My school is so disoragnized I don't know who the sub is. I am not sure if they got me a long term sub or a different sub every day/week. Also, my principal did not tell me that they changed my program.... so I am not sure if they changed it just for the sub so he/she isn't teaching a testing subject or if its a perm change.

I just went through something like this. I was on maternity leave and came back on Feb 1. My advice would be to just chill out as much as possible and enjoy your last few weeks at home. Get some stuff together for your first week, but beyond that... you'll have time. Don't do it now. Don't worry about it now. It will work out when you get back. You aren't going to be observed your first week, and that's all it should take you to figure this stuff out and and get back on track. Are you teaching classes that you've taught before and have lesson plans for? If so, just pull some of those out and adapt them as necessary. Enjoy as much time as you can with your baby. The worst thing to do would be to be back at work and regret all the hours you spent worrying about this when you could have been enjoying the last few weeks of your leave more.

ITA with everything here. Enjoy your time home and try not to think about work at all. When you go back, you will be fine. YOu will catch up and be absolutely fine.
