a vent about housing costs
I'm in Richmond today for work. The overly friendly staff woman I'm working with just came over to me absolutely appalled. She had read an article about a couple that pays $1400/mo rent to live in a 2br apt on LI, and wanted to know if that could possibly be true. She told me she has a 2br apartment here in Richmond with a full backyard and pays 700/mo and it's shocking to her that anyone would pay twice that for rent, even in NY.
I didn't even tell her what apts in NYC cost... (a 2br could be $5k+).

I pay 3 times that...but I can walk across the street to the ocean and be in nyc in a hour
It's all relative...location, location, location even in the world of rentals

Re: a vent about housing costs
my brother lives in Richmond VA and he bought a beautiful new house for 200K. he cost of living is so much less then here. He got lucky to because he took a job transfer and still is employeed with his NY salary, so he's making out great!!
My grandpa went down and was looking at apartments, and I was blown away by the prices!!

Re: a vent about housing costs
once you step out of NY this is how it is pretty much, except for CA....their prices are pretty much the same as NY.
My girlfriend lives in North Carolina and they paid cash for their brand new house in a brand new communty and still had money left over. Their taxes per year are like $1,500. So unfair.

I paid 1K a month back when we were renting, for a 1BR apt LR/Kitchen combo, no yard, just off street parking and no A/C.

she also would faint if she knew what we pay for a 1br in a doorman building in NYC. I changed the subject before she thought to ask

Re: a vent about housing costs
I was paying $1325 a month between mortgage and maint fees, living in Rockaway in a studio with no parking!! I had to rent a driveway down the street for $125 which I included in the above cost.
In Oregon, we now pay $1200 a month for a 3 bedroom, 2.5 bath home that is under 5 years old and has a yard and a 2 car garage!!!
The cost of living in NY is insane!! I know it's all about location but, to be honest, other then friends and family....I dont miss anything else!!!

Re: a vent about housing costs
Unfortunately a 2BR could cost more than that on LI.
Location, location, location... but is it really worth it? That's the question I'm asking myself. Just taxes alone are starting at 7K in moderate demad neighborhoods in suffolk county!
Raliegh-Duram area has a booming healthcare industry (I'm a nurse so this has much appeal), beautiful newer homes and much cleaner communities... and soon my parents - They bought a really cute 3BR 2Ba ranch with two WIC! taxes are less than 1500. A mortgage for a 4BR 2 BA house would be the same as what I'm paying for a 1BR rental here.

Re: a vent about housing costs
it's all relative...you make less in other states and pay less for a home, but you can get paid more and pay more for a home.
