A subtle yet effective way to protest

I may have posted about this before, but I think it warrants repeating. I got this from a member of another webgroup that focused on the cessation and education of PMs & BYBs. She is also a foster of multiple PM rescues, and spends a tremendous amount of money weekly on the dogs. I asked this member permission to repeat the information, and she was thrilled to think that her moment of clarity might cause a big stir.

We will call her "Carol."

Carol lives in a suburb in the mid-west, and has 2 pet stores that are close to her. One is closer, but sells puppies and other animals. Carol actually drives past this store and then continues down that road for 5 more miles to use the store that does not sell animals. One day, Carol drove past & wanted to stop in and tell the owner that although they are closer, she will not patronize their shop because they contribute to the cruelty of animals. She thought if they realized how one customer affects them, maybe she could convince them to change their ways. She then thought that if they knew exactly in dollars and cents what they were missing out on, it would make more of an impact. She did something so clever, and so effective....She went home and made a copy of her receipt, which totaled over $100 (apparently a tremendous amount of money in her neighborhood), and attached a note:

Dear owners of XXXX Pets;

I live very close to your shop, however I drive 5 extra miles to frequent XXXX pet store, because they do not sell small animals. You may not be aware of the horrors of Puppy Mills, and you may not know how your little shop contributes to the cruelty of animals, but what I want to tell you is this. Because you decide to sell puppies and support Puppy Mills, I take my business elsewhere. This is a copy of my receipt from my weekly visit to the pet store. This money could be yours every week if you would only choose to be responsible and end the sale of live animals for pets in your store. I am part of a community of tens of thousands - think of how much money is diverted to other pet stores just because of our belief that Pet Store animals and mills need to cease to exist.

In truth,
Carol

When "Carol" posted this, many members of the site followed suit and sent messages of this sort to their local pet stores. A few of them actually got results, in that a few stores stopped selling puppies. One store even began to hold local adoption clinics, and has a shelter day in which they donate 10% of profits to the PM rescue org.

Re: A subtle yet effective way to protest

This weekend DH and I were in the mall up here and went into the pet store to buy a new seatbelt for Charlie. We are new to the area and not familiar with all the stores yet.

I was shocked to see that they were selling puppies in the store!!!

I didn't even walk by the area where they were, I just turned around and grabbed DH and said loud enough for everyone, including the shoppers headed to the puppy area - "We are not shopping here while they sell puppies and support puppy mills" and walked out.

I am going to write a letter to the mall and the store using the template above and send them our receipt as well as some of our bigger receipts from other pet supply trips.

Thanks for posting this!
