A Dear Abby Letter on her First Birthday
Dear Abby,
One year ago today, your father and I welcomed you into our family. Your birth had been nothing short of terrifying and we would not know what the future held for you. As each day passed us by, we looked at you for what you were and are – our little miracle.
When your father and I decided to marry, we often discussed children and how we would raise them. We were excited to instill our values and ideas as well as our faith and our souls upon our kids. Once we decided to actually have children, life presented us with challenges. It was not going to be easy for us and it wasn’t. There were lots of tears and sadness, but the day I found out I had been pregnant with you, I had a sense of peace in me and knew you would be ok. It had been a very long 9 months.
In those 9 months, we talked about what you would look like. I prayed that you would look like your Daddy with my father’s smile. I thought you would be bald. You were nothing as I expected. You were tiny. You had tons of hair and best of all, you looked like a perfect combination of your father and myself with each of our best parts. Never in all of my imagination could I EVER have imagined creating such a beauty.
Your sweet temperament has stayed continuous throughout this year. You are easily soothed when you are sad and when people ask me if you are “always so happy” I can honestly say “pretty much.” You have a gift for gab from a long line of women on both sides of your family. There is not a person who meets you who is not drawn in by your face and personality. You exude enthusiasm for simple things. You are one of the most incredibly social children I have known, yet you are content by yourself for entertainment – the best of both worlds and hardly high maintenance.
My only regret for you is that you did not have a chance to know my parents, your grandparents. I tell you stories about them all the time and hope that you will ask questions about them as you grow. Your grandfather was a smart and sensitive man who adored all of his grandchildren. He would have cried in amazement at the sight of your beauty. Your grandmother, who knew you were on your way before she passed, hoped that you would be like me by saying “You should only have one just like yourself.” She would have eaten you to pieces.
Well, in some ways you are like me and in some ways you are like your father. You have my ability to express yourself and you have your father's common sense and pragmatism. We promise to give you our best as we are still learning how to be the best parents we can be. Thank you for being patient. Thank you for being our daughter. We are honored and blessed to have you as our child. We love you!
