I Made My Own Cough Syrup!!
The laundry detergent was such a success, I figured, why stop there?
Here's the recipe:
About 3/4 cup raw honey (got it for about $10/lb at the farm stand) 1 cup chopped raw onions 2 tsp ginger 1 tsp whole cloves the contents of 3 teabags of Yogi Throat Comfort tea
Put the onions and herbs in a stainless steel pot. Pour the honey over it. Simmer on the lowest possible heat, covered, stirring occasionally, for about 20 minutes. The honey will turn very liquidy. Strain (there will still be some little flecks of herbs in it). Store covered in the refrigerator. 1 tsp for kids and 1 tablespoon for grownups, every hour as needed. Nick (my 11 year old DS) tried it and reports that it "tastes like butt." However, he was coughing and said his throat was on fire before he took it, and hasn't coughed since and said his throat feels much better. The real test will be to see if it stops my girls from coughing ALL. NIGHT. LONG.
Here's what it looked like cooking:
And here's the finished product:
Eta: gave it to the kids last night and they didn't cough at all!! I'm super impressed, and my 6 year old Dd told my Ds that the taste wasn't that bad... "better than Benedryl, Nicky!" lol

Re: I Made My Own Cough Syrup!!
All cough medicine tastes like butt, no matter how much artificial cherry they throw in there.
Very cool though! I'll have to save this.

Love this and all natural is double love. I try to give my son honey for coughing and he hates it and can't get him to take it all, but I do want to try this. Awesome.

I ended up buying it at Vitamin World, but I saw it everywhere I went in my quest for dried slippery elm (Sherry's in Babylon, Total Health, etc)

Re: I Made My Own Cough Syrup!!
You go, girl!!
Another very good one is taking a black radish, making a deep hole in it with the knife, while keeping the bottom intact. Pour honey in the hole and leave in a dark place for 4 hours. Take 1 tablespoon of the liquid that come out of the radish every 2 hours.
